It's difficult to recommend why someone who's never heard of Ben Folds should buy this 'greatest hits' package, and that's because he is quite unlike any other artist out there. You could say buy Coldplay "because they're like U2", but with Ben the closest comparison is probably Elton John / Billy Joel, but Ben is much wittier and with occasional swearing. In the way that Elton/Billy might be seen as MOR and therefore not interesting, Ben is 20 years younger than those guys and much more contemporary in his lyrics and style. But here in the UK he is virutally unknown. He shouldnt' be. Basically this guy has talent to spare - a brilliant musician (multi-instrumentalist), composer, lyricist, singer and live performer. The only real criticism I'd make is that because the Piano is very much his main instrument, 95% of his songs have the same 'sound' - but if, like me, you enjoy the piano, then that's a good thing. Bottom line is that over the past 15 years he has written some brilliant tunes - several of which have been used in film and TV, but chart success has alluded him - of course intelligent music has been banned from the charts for the past 6 or 7 years now. So, here are 3 discs - the first being a collection of the (minor) hits he's had in North America and Europe, the second, live tracks, and the 3rd rarities - several of which are as good as anything he's put out. I've got 5 of his albums already and did think twice about a 'greatest hits', but I'm glad I did. If you are a Ben fan, there is plenty to interest you here. If you're just browsing, well if you like witty 'rock' music then this would be a good purchase for you...and in all probability will start a love affair with one of the most talented musicians of the past 15 years. Great stuff Ben.
