5.0 out of 5 stars Ex-Shadows duo famous for Diamonds 21 Mar 2005
By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Prior to their teaming up as a duo, Jet had two solo hits, Besame mucho just missed the UK top twenty. Man with the golden arm did better, just missing the UK top ten. At that point, Jet teamed up with Tony. Jet (the guitarist) and Tony (the drummer) had three huge instrumental UK hits together in 1963 - Diamonds (number one), Scarlett O' Hara (number two to the Beatles) and Applejack (number four) - although Diamonds is the only one that most people remember (assuming they remember Jet and Tony at all).
Jet was seriously injured in a road accident soon after Applejack was released. He never really recovered psychologically although his physical health was restored. Tony Meehan fulfilled contractual obligations. He eventually had his own minor hit (as leader of the Tony Meehan Combo) with Song of Mexico.
Some of the tracks include some singing but, as in the case of their former group, their skills as musicians exceeded their vocal skills. For that reason, the instrumental tracks are the best ones here.
This compilation presents the best of Jet and Tony, separately and together, after they left the Shadows. Nobody knows what they might have achieved without Jet's accident, but even the Shadows found big hits harder to come by after 1963.
If you enjoy sixties instrumental music (whether by the Shadows, the Ventures or anybody else) you might enjoy this collection. It's worth five stars anyway but would be even better without the vocals - or with a guest singer to do those.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely to see an album by Jet 24 Nov 2004
By Joan-Violet VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I used to know Jet Harris in the late 80's early 90's and he blew me away with his bass Guitar. I still think he is the greatest Bassist ever and it is great to see his stuff on cd all his hits too and Tony as well. Jet was one of the great Shadows who backed Cliff in the early days and a star in his own right.
The Platinum Collection [2CD + DVD]

4.0 out of 5 stars Got to be good - its half of the Shadows 26 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album contains their hits, which are brilliant - half of the Shadows had to come up with something pretty good. However, they have filled the album out with not-so-good stuff. The vocal tracks just don't come up to scratch, but the musicianship on all is undeniably excellent. Tony was a drummer above the usual, and Jet could play a great lead. Glad I bought it though, in spite of the lesser tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not all diamonds 6 Mar 2008
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
When Diamonds by Jet & Tony made No 1 they replaced their former group the Shadows who had already replaced Cliff Richard. So 1963 was a good year for all things Cliff.
In 1962 both had left a few months apart and Harris cut a couple of singles which charted.Meehan was employed by Decca as a producer but soon both teamed up to create the instrumental duo and charted a number of times over the next 12 months.
They would never appear again as a duo until the Cliff Richard Event in 1999.
Apart from the instrumentals Jet Harris fancied himself as a singer-though he's very avarage.Foot Stomp appeared in the movie Just For Fun,Chills & Fever was first cut by Ronnie Love in the States and later became the first Tom Jones single. Some People as a B side had no chance after Carol Deene covered it in a superior version.
Meanwhile Diamonds was covered in the States by the Ventures and Tony Meehan was really the one who decided that Decca turn down the Beatles.
In 1968 he produced a couple of singles for an Apple group called Trash but whether or not the Beatles knew of his activities at Decca is a moot point.Eventually Meehan phased himself out of the business
They say what goes around comes around and but for Jet Harris it never did again after 1964.There was an attempt at a comeback in the later 60s with a single produced by a Trogg but Harris was his own worst enemy and just one more statistic of the demon drink and spent years in the wilderness before finally cutting a pair of CDs in the 90s for an Indie label.
Since this CD both have unfortunately passed on

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 gems, 15 potboilers 5 Dec 2010
By Paul Magnussen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
During his time with The Shadows, Jet Harris was, in my view, one of the great bass guitarists, laying the foundation that was later built upon by Paul McCartney and others. Listen to Nivram, or 36-24-36. Compare the bass line of Sleepwalk with Santo & Johnny's original, particularly in the middle eight.

Outside The Shadows, however, for whatever reasons, his inspiration and/or material failed. It did, however, manage to produce two superb UK Top Five hits (written — probably not coincidentally — by Jerry Lordan, composer of Apache), and one good one. A traumatic car crash then, unfortunately, clamped the lid down on his career.

This album thus comprises three gems and fifteen pot-boilers of varying degrees of listenability.

If you're a hard-core fan, then, buy the album. If you're not, buy it anyway for the three gems — or at any rate buy them on MP3: Diamonds, Scarlett O'Hara and Applejack.
