The five stars are for the films, which are among the best Hammer produced. However, this collection is just a cut down version of the Ultimate Hammer Collection (which contained 21 films of varying quality), and have all been released numerous times on video and DVD before - the same collection can also be purchased as stand alone DVDs. But, if you don't already have these movies, then here is the perfect way to get in to Hammer films. Personally, I think it would be nice to see a UK distributor release some of Hammers more obscure and rare films.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia 4 Feb 2011
By Mr Man
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This collection brought all those horror films of the 60's and 70's back to me.
The collections has the the full range of horror from Vampires through Frankenstein to the Devil, not forgetting "Nanny" a very creepy film.
Excellent value for money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Of varying quality 6 Oct 2009
Format:DVD
This box set comprises 5 films from Hammer Film Productions. First is "The Nanny," unusual among Hammer films for not being a horror. It's kindof a psychological thriller. Ironically, then, it's one of their scariest films, with Bette Davis giving an understated but very creepy performance as the titular nanny. It's also one of their most serious and intelligent films, and the tension is unrelenting
Then "Dracula- Prince of Darkness;" this is more standard Hammer fare, the second in their series with Christopher Lee as the Count. Moderately entertaining, but unremarkable.
Third is "Quatermass and the Pit," concerning a strange object found during excavations at a London tube station. The plot echoes somewhat H.P. Lovecraft's Chtulhu stories like "At the Mountains of Madness", and is even slightly similar to Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," (released the year after, I think) . A good film, half sci-fi, half horror, with an interesting plot, slightly more cerebral than most Hammer films (the attempt to incorporate elements of the Christian Devil into the nature of the alien seems somewhat muddled, though).
Then "Frankenstein Created Woman", the second in their Frankenstein series with Peter Cushing as Doctor F. Watchable enough, especially Susan Denberg as the beautiful subject of the Doc.'s experiments.
Last is "The Devil Rides Out" a story of Satanism with Christopher Lee as the good guy, a student of the occult drawn into a battle of wills with the nefarious Mocata (Charles Gray). A well-paced yarn, though difficult to take seriously, with some amusingly bad special effects in the climactic scene. I have often heard/read that this is one of the best Hammer films. It's ok, not that good, imo.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Hammer Horror boxset 1 May 2013
By FJY
Format:DVD
This boxset contains five of Hammer's "best" films. Basically, it is a scaled-down version of the Ultimate Hammer box-set, which I also own but I bought this because I am a completist. This set contains some classics of Hammer Horror and I have reviewed each of the contained films below :

The Nanny - Probably one of Bette Davis's finest films and with a superb performance from her. This is not really a horror film, I regard it more as a thriller with some small elements of horror. It is also one of Hammer's few films in the 1960s that were made in black and white. It is a very suspenseful film and one of Hammer's best. Four stars from me for this one.

Dracula Prince Of Darkness - One of the best Hammer Dracula films and the second to feature Christopher Lee. Sadly, there is no Peter Cushing this time. A very creepy film, even though the Count doesn't appear until about halfway into the film, so you will need patience. Philip Latham also has a key role as a very creepy butler. One of my favourite Hammer films. Four stars from me.

Quatermass And The Pit - This stars Andrew Keir and Barbara Shelley, who also appeared together in Dracula Prince Of Darkness. This is more of a sci-fi film than a horror film. It is also one of the few Hammer films that bores me, because not much happens at all, there is no real gore and I cannot understand why it is so highly regarded. I have never been keen on the other Quatermass films, either, so perhaps it is just me. Three stars from me.

Frankenstein Created Woman - Peter Cushing plays the Baron, again. This film was much better than the inferior Evil Of Frankenstein that came before it and it is directed by the legendary Terence Fisher, who directed most of the Hammer Frankenstein films.

5.0 out of 5 stars A view of Horror in the past 26 Feb 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Great for retro viewing & brings back memories of late Friday nights in my youth ! The stories make for easy watching & it is good to see how simple the story lines are, yet can still be quite powerful in their message compared to todays extravagant & graphic filming. The locations used are so effective if you like creepy houses! Good if you want to see how horror looked years ago or want a trip down memory lane :)
