Con Funk Shun may have made little impression on this side of the Atlantic but in their native America they sold an awful amount of records. For the uninitiated, the group sound like a mixture of 'The Commodores' and 'Earth Wind and Fire' and this album features plenty of funky bass lines, loads of "well, well, well's", soulful vocals and stacks of horns.
This collection works well on a number of levels:
It is a pretty good overview of the bands career and contains most of the groups biggest hits. 'Ffun' was a No 1 R&B record back in 1977 and has jazzy leanings, 'Got To Be Enough' is from 1980 and is the most EW&F like dancer on the album and 'Too Tight' is a memorable wriggler with great percussion and a summery vibe. Other uptempo hits from the groups catalogue include 'Ms Got The Body' and the more rock/funk 'Chase Me'. This collection also proves that Con Funk Shun were just as good at producing mid tempo soul songs and killer ballads. 'Love's Train' in particular is a gorgeous mid-tempo song with a great vocal. In the vein of The Gap Band's 'Yearning For Your Love' its a great chill out tune. 'Let Me Put Love On Your Mind' on the other hand is reminiscent of the Isley Brothers with its soaring rock guitars and gradually building tempo. The chorus of the song will explode into your brain! Some of the groups lesser known but more experimental work is also featured here. 'Juicy' has a playful, latin percussion to it as does the lyrically refreshing (ie - not about dancing or ladies!) 'California 1'.
Intelligently compiled, the running order of 'The Best Of Con Funk Shun' also makes for a pretty good and varied album listen (although I personally find 17 tracks a bit long) which is an added bonus.
There are a couple of key tracks missing 'Confunkshunizeya', 'Burnin' Love','Can You Feel The Groove Tonight' etc) but maybe those will appear on volume 2 if that ever surfaces. All in all though, this is a smashing collection and well worth a purchase whether you are a long term fan or a newbie whos 'catching up' with your 70's and 80's funk.
Recommended.
