Book Description

28 Nov 2008
Flash fiction is generally recognized as being fiction under a thousand words - the perfect length for a coffee break - but despite its appeal as a quick read, it is not simplistic. Quite the opposite; it can and should be one of the most demanding literary forms, with a need for perfectly crafted prose, a complete story arc in a tight space, and an immediately engaging hook. The Best of Every Day Fiction 2008 brings together one hundred flash fiction pieces selected from Every Day Fiction's first year of publication. These stories cross boundaries of genre and geography, with tastes of science fiction, humour, romance, fantasy, horror, and surrealism alongside the more traditional literary pieces, from authors writing in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, India, Israel, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone 4 Mar 2009
By Clever Spud TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a collection of one hundred flash fiction stories from the first year of operation over at Every Day Fiction. Flash fiction is characterized as stories of less than 1000 words in length.

This collection covers a wide variety of genres from literary to horror, science fiction and fantasy.

I'm someone who tends to favour the SF&F genres so reading stories which I wouldn't normally tackle has been eye-opening. And the bonus is that at less than a thousand words, even if I don't "get" a story at least I'm not going to take long to realise it and there's still plenty more to choose from.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great selection of fast fiction 10 Nov 2009
Format:Hardcover
I can't often be bothered with Flash Fiction websites because the quality is so variable. But this print collection is full of great stories, all of which are professionally written and fast to read. This also makes a great coffee table book because it is so fast to dip in and out of.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Every Day Fiction 5 Feb 2009

With Every Day Fiction, there's always something for everyone. This is the "Best of" collection, which covers the highlights of EDF's first year of fiction. Personal favorites include "The Surrender," "For Cabbages and Ale," "Monochrome," "The Philosopher in the Dark," and "Desert Island Solitaire." These and many more gems come together to make this a volume highly worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick tid-bits of great fiction 8 July 2011
By Alex - Published on Amazon.com

First of all, the best way to get an idea of how the stories read you should just go to everydayfiction.com and read some free stories. The anthology collects some of the best from the site so no better review than actually sampling the real thing, right?

Now to the actual collection: there are numerous stories in all kinds of genres and dozens of styles so even if you hate a few, there are a ton more to read and enjoy. Even better, each story will only take a few minutes to read so you can quickly read some stuff while waiting for your PC to boot up or while on the train or while using the bathroom (Preferably not all three at once).

Overall a great collection and a great premise to focus on very short stories, which throw you right in the middle of things.
