This live album isn't terrible by any means, but it isn't what is advertised on the cover. Sure, there are some of Donovan's signature songs here in live form, but to call this "The Best of Donovan" is a misnomer if there ever was one. A far better title would have been "Donovan Live" or something similar. Nothing on the CD cover mentions that the album is recorded live, and neither does the linear note even mention when and where the songs were recorded. Luckily, buying from Amazon you at least know it is live, but when I bought this CD in a shop I didn't realise until I'd put the disc in and pressed play.
The sound quality for most of the songs is what is to be expected for a live, in-concert recording from the 1960's, but certainly is good enough to be enjoyed. For example, "Universal Soldier" really shows off Donovan's lilting voice brilliantly, and there is a good rendition of "Sunshine Superman". The main fault of this album is that Pegasus Records evidently knew that fewer people would buy anything advertised as a live album, and so tried to pass this off as a greatest hits compilation. For the budget price, the music is interesting enough, but do not be fooled into thinking that this is something more than a simple collection of live performances.
