5.0 out of 5 stars A Guaranteed Laugh!! 26 Dec 2005
I remember when Dick Emery was standard Saturday night viewing. This DVD will bring back the memories instantly. Good clean old fashioned (even slightly innocent) humour of a sort that represents a by-gone age along with a generous sprinkling of 1970s fashions.
Dick Emery is truly one of the comedy classic geniuses of our time. Sad that they do not mention him as he too has his place in the BBC Comedy Hall of Fame, along with Morcambe and Wise, Two Ronnies, and Dads Army. I found it hilarious! I showed it to my sister and brother-in-law and they found it hilarious too!
Im normally very picky about buying comedy videos as once youve seen them they cease to be funny. Not so in this case as I watched it at least 3 times. There is also a menu where you can select your favourite sketches and all the familiar characters are there....Sexed Starved Hettie, Toothy Vicar, and not forgetting (my personal favourite) Gaylord with his familiar "DA-AAAAAAD, I THINK I GOT IT WRONG AGAIN!!!!!
I suspect the BBC released this to see how the market place would warm to a DVD release. I will definitely be getting a follow up version when, and if, the BBC decide to release one. I know from having watched the original series there is plenty more excellent material gathering dust somewhere! So buy it and enjoy, because you will be very glad you did.

2.0 out of 5 stars WAY SHORT OF HIS BEST 7 Jan 2007

This is a really lousy selection masquerading as a BEST OF. This DVD watched by anyone who has never seen Dick Emery on TV would think he was third rate. Far better compilations have been done on TV. Buy this one with caution, it does him no justice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shame on the BBC compiler who was involved! 21 July 2010
Verified Purchase
Best of? Beg to differ! Whilst all Dick Emery is enjoyable, (and hence this is still worth getting for "something"), what a wasted opportunity! In 80 mins. they only managed one "Mandy" clip, and even that does not have the trademark "stumble" afterwards! (That's the woman who does "Ooh you are awful", by the way - probably his best known catchphrase, to everyone except the compiler, that is.) They could have easily squeezed in another 30-sec. "Mandy" here and there. After all, other characters appear several times. A few of the sketches are WAY too long for a compilation. Anyway, if you can get it cheap, do so - if only for the sublime train waiting room sketch! PS - just noticed : even the back of the box says Mandy is his most famous character, so they back up what I say. Shameful!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ooh this is Awful, but I like it! 5 Feb 2011

Some of this DVD seemed decidedly unfunny, but then came the classic Dick Emery character, the trans-gender woman, and the sledgehammer double-entendres and innuendos were impossible not to laugh at.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Dick Emery 4 Jan 2011
Being a fan of Dick Emery, we were so pleased to be able to purchase the DVD from Amazon for Christmas. We laughed so much and it made our day on Christmas Day. As usual the TV can be a little disappointing, and it was great to have this DVD of Dick
Emery to watch.

Dick Emery, in my opinion, was one of the greatest. He is funny, without being rude and a lot of the current so called comics could learn a lot from him. He is definitely Numero Uno in our house.

4.0 out of 5 stars Roy Walker comes to mind 1 April 2009
Roy Walker comes to mind with this Dick Emery DVD ''Its good but its not right''. True all the characters are featured like ''I got it wrong dad!"but the dad I associate with this sketch is Roy Kinnear BUT no Roy Kinnear on this compilation. Likewise where is Pat Coombes, another regular but not featured here and very little of Helen (Bad Girls) Fraser in her comedic days.
After watching Stanley Baxter on TV this Christmas why not release a BBC dvd - he did plenty of shows for the BBC. The LWT shows have come out so why not BBC - I expect it won't be the best but probably better than nothing.

For those of us who remember Dick Emery these episodes are great to watch British comedy at it's best shame we lost a great comic early in life.
