Product Description

Album Description

At the very dawn of the epochal 1960s, few names were more prominent in the public eye than that of a former poultry shop employee from Philadelphia. He was born Ernest Evans but was called Chubby Checker and popularized The Twist, a dance phenomenon that marked the beginning of a dramatic cultural shift. Checker quickly graduated from being just another singer looking for a break to becoming one of the most recognized faces of the era.

For his 3rd single while Cameo Parkway wondered what to do with him the answer came from a Hank Ballard B side which was a copy of a Drifters song called Whatcha gonna do.Thus The Twist ended up topping the U S charts on 2 different occasions and Chubby Checker became the face that launched a 1000 cash ins.Including Frank Sinatra for Godssakes!
Its success encouraged the labels to copy everything that moved-even the singers name had been inspired by Fats Domino!
A later sequel Lets twist again was another chart topper as was Pony Time-a song made previously by Don Covay & the Goodtimers and served as an inspiration for the Dee Dee Sharp song Ride
Fortunately Checker never fancied himself as Marvin Gaye-he kept to his limitations cashing in right into the Urban Folk Revival.
Not included here is the label's attempts to copy the British Invasion with Do the Freddie.
In fact Cameo Parkway inspired Gary U S Bonds to cut a single called Copy Cat after noting that Dancin' Party was just too close for comfort!

At last! 11 Sep 2008

I've been looking for a CD with the original versions of his hits, and this is it. The 60's original versions remastered not those re-recorded versions.

Fun, Happy Music 31 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
Much of what's here is fine, catchy pop-rock aimed directly at the teenagers of the 1960s. That means it's technically "dated", but the joyous nature of these songs transcends it's time, while remaining a time machine for the nostalgic. There are many highlights on this compilation, which features excellent remastered sound quality.
