Product Description

From Amazon.com

The Bothy Band, along with their contemporaries De Dannan and Planxty, helped define that oxymoronic beast, the modern traditional Irish band. The Best of the Bothy Band, which was released in 1983, four years after the band split up, is a superb introduction to their blend of tradition and innovation that still inspires Celtic musicians. From ancient ballads, sung by siblings Micheal O'Dhomhnaill and Triona ni Dhomhnaill, to driving sets of dance tunes, played by uilleann piper Paddy Keenan, flutist Matt Molloy, and fiddler Tommy Peoples (and later Kevin Burke), the Bothies could do it all. The rhythmic center of the band was Donal Lunny, who provided the heartbeat on bodhran, bouzouki, and guitar. The Bothy Band has been incorrectly described as playing with the intensity of a rock band. Just listen to the a cappella track "Fionnghuala" and you will hear a band that drank deeply from a more primal musical well. --Michael Simmons

CD Description

The Bothy Band were only together for three years but in that short time-span they were responsible for the rebirth of traditional Irish music and set the standard for all bands which would come after them. This compilation, originally released in 1983, four years after the band split up, is a superb introduction to their blend of tradition and innovation that still inspires Celtic musicians. From ancient ballads, sung by siblings Micheal O'Dhomhnaill and Triona ni Dhomhnaill, to driving sets of dance tunes, played by uilleann piper Paddy Keenan, flautist Matt Molloy, fiddler Tommy Peoples (and later Kevin Burke) and the band’s rhythmic center Donal Lunny, (bodhran, bouzouki, and guitar), the Bothies did it all. Tracks: The Salamanca; The Banshee; The Sailor's Bonnet (Reels) / Pretty Peg; Craig's Pipes (Song And Reel) / The Blackbird (Air, Set Dance And Reel) / The Maids Of Mitchelstown (Reel) / Casadh An tSugain (Song) / Music In The Glen; The Humours Of Scariff; The Otter's Holt (Reels) / Fionnghuala (Song) / Old Hag You Have Killed Me (Jig) / Do You Love An Apple? (Song) / Leitrim Fancy; Round The World For The Sport; Rip The Calico; Martin Wynne's; The Enchanted Lady; The Holy Land (Jig And Reels) / The Death Of Queen Jane (Song) / The Green Groves Of Erin; The Flowers Of Red Hill (Reels)

Folk Music had been enjoying a revival in Ireland in the early 70's, with bands like Planxty and the Chieftains making the genre relevant to a new generation. But when the Bothy Band broke onto the scene in 1975 it was immediately apparent that this was something new. This was Folk with Attitude. Lots of Attitude.

By 1979, after three excellent Studio Albums plus the Live "After Hours", the Bothy Band was all but over as the members moved on to other things, leaving behind a reputation for powerful musicianship and excellence that was second to none. In their turn they acted as the inspiration for the likes of the Pogues and Bono who would go on to take Irish Music global.

This collection is a fairly representative sample of what the Bothy Band were about, mixing fast-paced Jigs and Reels with the relatively sedate but brilliantly executed Songs that are arguably the pick of the bunch with duties split between the Domhnaill siblings. Mícheál lends his voice to the haunting "Casadh An tSúgáin" and "The Death of Queen Jane" - which also features an awesome yet delicate solo on Uilléan Pipes by Paddy Keenan - whilst his Sister Tríona leads on "Do You Love an Apple" and the upbeat ditty "Pretty Peg".

Whether you are looking for an introduction to Traditional Irish Music or just looking for something to play once a year on St Patrick's Day, you could do a lot worse than this. If you like it, get the Albums - they're just as good.

At last! The Bothy Band on CD. If you like Irish music, get it, get it, get it!

The Bothies are the Led Zeppelin of Irish music: simply the best musicians, each one a master, together at the peak of their powers. They were the cream of the last generation who learned the music in its old, traditional context, and gave it a burst of energy which still carries it on today.

It's fairly well chosen - no best-of can please everybody - but where's the Kesh Jig set? The single most influential piece of traditional music ever recorded, omitted. Bizarre; still, it appears on plenty of other compilations.

I actually live in an old salmon bothy, albeit on the Moray Firth of Scotland, but that wasn't the incentive to buy this c.d. The credentials of the musicians were enough. There is not much I can add to the previous excellent reviewers, especially the knowledgeable Roger Smith, except maybe to pick out the exceptional pipering of Paddy Keenan. I often play this recording along with a Willie Clancey c.d., and I think Paddy compares very favourably. I fail to see how anyone with a soul could not love this album.
