Biography

In Booker T. Jones, the seed was planted early. Not yet a teenager, he was already hauling his stack of newspapers to Phineas Newborn’s front yard where, while folding them for his after-school delivery route, he could listen to the jazz great practice piano. With those notes ringing in his head, he’d set out into the neighborhood, picking up the sound of the streets, the sound of ... Read more in Amazon's Booker T. & The MG's Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

These four gentlemen may have been the most important players in all of soul music. They were an interracial group before it was popular or even accepted. They formed the core of the house backing-band at Stax Records, wrote classic soul songs, and discovered and produced artists at Stax. And as this CD makes very clear, they recorded great songs in their own right. All instrumentals, the MGs wrote their own classics-"Green Onions", "Time Is Tight"--and interpreted others--"Groovin'", "Hang 'Em High." The contemporary sound and feel of these decades- old tracks proves what visionaries they were. --Robert Gordon

An album that starts with the theme tune to BBC's cricket matches, but ends with a stomping live performance of Green Onions. My personal favourite is "Fuquawi" (careful how you say it!) as it is not featured on other collections, such as the Atlantic's "Best of" album - not even the 3CD box set "Time Is Tight" (available on the Stax label). Includes the 60's floor filler "Soul Clap `69". Next, try Atlantic's "Best of" album.

A good "greatest hits" collection from their later years 6 April 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This CD compiles the best of the MG's output from the period after Stax and Atlantic ended their distribution agreement--basically 1966-1970. The MG's during this period played music that was more refined and little more "jazzy" than their earlier sides. The reviewer above is very wrong--this CD does have "Melting Pot" and "Time is Tight" and few of those other songs. If you've already got a collection of MG's material that covers the early (1962-1966) years, this CD is a good place to get a taste of their later sounds. If you're just starting your MG's collection, start with the "Very Best of" collection on Rhino. It covers both the early and late periods and has good liner notes and photos.

The Memphis Sound At Its Best 30 Dec. 2012
By The Hit Man - Published on Amazon.com
Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn never publicly received, during the explosion of the Soul / R&B era ,credit for developing and playing some of the best Soul / R&B music...period!They were acknowledged as studio / back up musicians at best. There are not any bad cuts on this CD. True, fans of only Booker T & MG's will nit pick and have issues. These songs and the albums they came from represent yet another avenue of Soul / R&B that had not previously existed. Enjoy it for what it was and is....creativity at its best that helped define an era. And is still worth listening to today!

Good, but definately not Booker's best 11 May 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If you are looking to buy some Booker T. and the M.G.'s. which if you haven't, you should, this is not the place to start. This poor compliation does not even include Melting Pot, nor Soul Limbo, Hip Hug-Her, Chinese Checkers (not a smash but a classic anyhow) or even Green Onions or Time is Tight for God's sake! Their signature songs! If you are really interested in the band, the greatest instrumental group of the sixties, then you should look into buying Rhino's thoughtfully compiled Time is Tight boxed set, or their albums Green Onions, Hip Hug-Her and Melting Pot, the best three they have to offer. The Rhino Best of.... is also far superior to this. My guess is that the label compiled what songs they could get for a cheap price that had recognizable names. That is the only excuse for such an incomplete collection. Definately not poor quality music, but really there's no reason for this album to exist.

"Time is Tight" stinks! 6 Nov. 2004
By TexasTip - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I bought this for "Time is Tight" but it seems to be an extended play version. It would have been better to just play it like it aired and extend that, but NOOOOO, they didn't! On top of that, they are off key and out of sync at times during the tune!

They didn't exactly pick the best songs for this disc either.
