Biography

Black Sabbath has been so influential in the development of heavy metal rock music as to be a defining force in the style. The group took the blues-rock sound of late '60s acts like Cream, Blue Cheer, and Vanilla Fudge to its logical conclusion, slowing the tempo, accentuating the bass, and emphasizing screaming guitar solos and howled vocals full of lyrics expressing mental anguish and macabre… Read more in Amazon's Black Sabbath Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Formed in Birmingham in the late 1960s, Black Sabbath would rapidly ascend to become towering figures of the music they helped to invent: heavy metal. Blending powerful guitar riffs with a heavy rhythm section and lyrical themes of the occult, drugs and all things dark, Black Sabbath broke through in 1970 with their self-titled debut album and its hit single, "Paranoid". They then rode the crest of the wave of British metal that rose up in the 1970s, recording one classic track after another ("War Pigs", "Sweet Leaf", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath") until lead singer Ozzy Osbournedeparted for a solo success in 1979. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s,their line-up went through numerous changes, to include at various points Deep Purple's Ian Gillan and Ronnie James Dio. The Best Of Black Sabbath is their most comprehensive greatest hits compilation to date. This 32-track, 2-CD set gathers all of the best-known songs from early Sabbath's now-classic line-up, while still finding space for a few live tracks and some later, post-Ozzy recordings ("Heaven And Hell", "Turn Up The Night" and "The Dark/Zero The Hero").The Best Of Black Sabbath is an essential introduction to some of the finest works of these rock pioneers. --Ted Kord

Damn Fine!!! 18 Jun 2001
Format:Audio CD
Well what can i say? this album has everything! i cant think of a track on it that i ever skip past on the CD player! you have to listen to it more than once to take it all in though because at around 2 hours 40 mins its a great collection to listen to for ages and ages. With rocking tracks like Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and lets not forget the trudgingly excelent Black Sabbath with its atmospheric sound! i wouldnt advise listening to this in the Dark all alone! of course there are so many greats on this album i aint gonna go through them all and they're listed above anyway. its safe to say that this is a damn fine collection of great work with many great guitar peices and some evil lyrics. all i have left to say now is BUY IT NOW!!!

deep purple, led zeppelin and black sabbath. the trinity. the heaviest of these were sabbath and without them heavy metal may not have even existed. it certainly wouldn't be the same as it is today. tony iommi is responsible for some of the best riffs ever written and this compilation is a testament to that fact. add to this the throat seering howl of the legendary ozzy osbourne and you have on eof the best combinations in this genre.

classic tune after classic tune. not always as technically perfect as it could be or as well recorded as it deserves but this only adds to the charm of these spirited and ground-breaking recordings. every rock fan should have some sabbath in thier collection and this is as good a place to start as anywhere else.
