The last chapters are concerned with Glasnost, the collapse of communism and the Wall, and the experience of German reunification. I bought this book for my daughter to learn about the Berlin Wall and it's impact before we visited the city during the celebrating of 20 years since the wall came down. Really a little too 'dry' in it's telling. She got a lot more feel for the subject out of a novel "Escape to West Berlin" by Maurine Dahlberg and we also watched Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

This book provides a fascinating read and offers much of the information about the wall. With many colour maps and pictures the book shows you how the wall really was.

Readers in grades 5-7 will find this 'New Perspectives' series addition stands alone as an excellent survey of history surrounding the Berlin Wall in general and Eastern Europe in particular. The Berlin Wall uses different viewpoints to tell of how the wall was built, how it affected the peoples' lives, and how it came down. Politics is clearly explained and explored.
