DVD Description

Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover play the unforgettable lead roles in this powerful, widely acclaimed cinematic triumph from Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme.
On a journey to find freedom, Sethe (Winfrey) is constantly confronted by the secrets that have haunted her for years. Then, an old friend from her past (Glover) unexpectedly re-enters her life. With his help, Sethe may finally be able to rediscover who she is and regain her lost sense of hope. Also featuring outstanding performances from Thandie Newton and Lisa Gay Hamilton, Beloved is a landmark adaptation of Toni Morrison's Nobel Prize-winning novel.

Beloved 13 April 2005
This is a fantastic portrayal of an incredible book, the casting is superb, and the acting is faultless. I absolutely adore Morrison's novel so I was dubious when watching the film for the first time as I was not 100% convinced that it would do the amazing text justice.

There are gaps in the film that could obviously not be included, things which the novel highlights, and that there was probably not enough running time left to insert! This is a long film however, and it is incredibly harrowing. It is similar to the book in the way that once you have seen it, you will never forget it, it haunts you, and reminds you of the evil that was slavery.

I recommend this film, but be warned that some scenes are graphic, not purely for the director's desire to have blood in the film, but because of the nature of the story that is being told.

Watch this film - but have some tissues handy!

Flawed Masterpiece 18 Feb 2003
Oprah Winfrey's much vaunted project in bringing the novel to film, in the event, was badly received. It may be that our cousins across the pond thought it a shade anti-American; if so, they missed the point. It's a painful, poignant, sometimes funny piece, shades of a pro-coloured "Gone With the Wind", and we all know how that novel whitewashed the white slave-owners somewhat, brilliant though it is.

Personally, I found the ending rather rushed, leaving threads of plot confusing and badly resolved. Otherwise, the film, (a long sit, by the way) is well worth enjoying and I urge you to give it a chance. I bought it just because of the unfavourable American reaction. So much for critics, eh?

This felt like a slightly heavy-handed attempt to emulate The Colour Purple. In this case, it just didn't work for me.I haven't read the book but it seems this film wasn't a successful translation of it.

The acting was commendable, but the film was overly long and was boring. I couldn't quite feel connected to the characters enough, the plot was more of a series of events, and the ending left too many loose ends to be in any way satisfying. The supernatural elements came across as slightly ridiculous and over the top; again, I think this is because it is hard to portray such things visually with as much gravitaslift as they would have in a book.

This appears to be a character-heavy story that probably worked well in book form, but not as a film where some things such as lenghty narrative and characters' inner thoughts are difficult to portray in enough depth. It was a struggle to sit through the almost 3 hours of it.
