More About the Author

Chris Gatcum has been involved in photography for over two decades, working as a photographer, journalist, and author. Like many aspiring photographers, his career started at college where a degree course taught him a wide range of skills and technologies, covering both studio and location work, large format photography through to the then-emerging digital technology, and, of course, Photoshop.

He went on to work as a set-builder on a number of high-end advertising campaigns and as a photographer and retoucher, before joining the UK's longest-standing photography magazine, Amateur Photographer, as technical writer. Magazines led to books, and the rest--as the cliché goes--is history...

Chris' books include Creative Digital Photography: 52 Weekend Projects (published as Camera Creative in the US), Light & Shoot: 50 Fashion Photos, and Landscape Photography: The Four Seasons. He currently lives in East Sussex, UK.

Dorling Kindersley has earned a justifiably good reputation for producing excellent books, and this is no exception.

The text is well-written, breaking down possibly daunting topics into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Even better, there are lots of photographs to illustrate the topics under discussion. After all, photography is a visual art; much better to have pictures which show "if you do X then the result is Y" rather than relying on dry and impenetrable words.

The book is written with Canon and Nikon users in mind (the largest market segment), but the instructions are easily adaptable to other makes of camera.

I would unhesitatingly recommend this book to anyone looking to get into photography.

This book is amazing!!! I really couldn't get my head around aperture, ISO, depth of field etc etc, all seemed to complicated!!!! But this book is so easy to understand and it is just like being in a lesson! Bite size chunks of info and easy to understand . Absolutely no negatives for me about this book! Well done to the author!

A very intuitive guide for amateur photographers who wish to expand their knowledge and obtain a basic theoretical background in photography. I really enjoyed reading it and i believe it helped me not only take better pictures but also enjoy the process much more. Highly recommended book, probably the best of 4 similar books that I purchased together.

I got this book for Christmas and its perfect for any beginning photographer and its breaks down all the jargon and makes it easy for an newcomer (such as myself) to understand. The book also makes excellent use of diagrams and photo shots to help a photographer understand the different aspects and features involved in taking a photograph.

The book also has an excellent introduction to the different types of cameras as well and the differences between them, i.e. compact cameras, bridge, DSLR and compact system cameras as well as the different types of lenses that can be used to create a variety of different photos, e.g. macro, telephoto or standard and other equipment that can be used with your camera, as well as much much more.

So if you are getting into photography I would highly recommend this book as it is very well written, easy to understand and it will give you what you need to know to help you on your way to become a photographer.

For beginners like myself it's an excellent choice. I really learnt a lot about the piece of equipment I have in my hands and how to correctly use it.

A great book for beginners who know nothing about cameras. I now understand the difference between SLR and bridge cameras and some of the basics for taking good pictures.

Gave this to my wife as a birthday present to support her growing interest in my hobby, and to answer all the questions I couldn't.
As soon as it arrived I had a sneaky read before wrapping it, and quickly learned something new.
Although I am an experienced old-school photographer, my ownership of a DSLR is relatively new and only just venturing outside of 'Auto' mode, and I think I might end up buying a second copy to save my marriage.
This book is brilliant, it explains everything in easy-to-read explanations with pictorial examples alongside.
I would highly recommend it to any improving photographer even at double the price.
