Product Description

Ann Pilling manages to combine fascinating historical detail with mysterious and compelling ghost stories, and THE BEGGAR’S CURSE is no exception. Here reissued with a stunning new cover by David Wyatt, in a new B format, it will attract a whole new wave of fans.

Ever since Ann Pilling’s debut novel, BLACK HARVEST, now a Collins Modern Classic, she has built her reputation into one of our best-loved and most talented contemporary writers for children. She won the Guardian Fiction Award for HENRY’S LEG. These two reissues, THE BEGGAR’S CURSE and THE WITCH OF LAGG, follow the same children who appear in BLACK HARVEST – Colin, Prill and Oliver.

In THE BEGGAR’S CURSE, Colin, Prill and Oliver arrive to stay in the village of Stang, where they soon realise that there’s something terribly wrong. Prill feels something sinister in the ancient rituals of the village play… Colin knows the ‘accidents’ that keep happening are something much more gruesome… But only Oliver seems to know the truth. He understands the dark secret the village is hiding and senses that it comes from the black waters of Blake’s Pit. He can even feel the terrible power of the beggar’s curse…

Ann Pilling has managed, yet again, to create a mysterious, compelling and gripping tale.

Sometimes this book is really hard to put down. Colin Prill and Oliver go on a trip to the village of Stang. As soon as they arrived they realized something was terribly wrong. The action is fast with lots going on which keeps you interested. Prill feels something is wrong with the traditional village play. Colin knows something is going on as there are losts of accidents.Only Oliver seems to know the truth...Some parts of the book dragged on a little as they were too descriptive but mostly the action kept going. At the end there is a good twist to the story, but you are never too sure.
Good for boys and girls aged 11+.

creepy children's book 30 April 2009
By Rubbah
Format:Paperback
An enjoyable scary tale that follows the Black harvest( though doesn't necessarily has to have been read). It's Easter, and the blakeman children, Prue and Colin, with their annoying cousin Oliver are off to stay with a distant relative in the small village of Stang. Stang is a place deeply immersed in local customs and folklore, being home to a pit that reputedly has Old Stang at the bottom, because a beggar centuries before cursed the town to flood. The locals have a mixed reaction to the visitors, the Edges(who trace their ancestory to the beggar) are openly hostile. Will the children be able to understand and defeat the dark forces at work before it's too late?
Highly recommended, it's better than The Black harvest, and Oliver is a really interesting charater. I will be looking for the rest in the series.

The Beggar's Curse 4 Jan 2005
By Jess Cooper - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The Sequel to Black Harvest The Beggar's Curse continues the story of Colin Oliver and Prill.Set in Rural Cheshire it is a typical 'horrible holiday' story but with several sinister twists. Written for those with a taste for atmospheric and historicle fiction it makes a delightfuly chilling read.Despite starting slowly and having a slight air predictability The Beggar's Curse is imposible to put down.
