Product Description

This collection of short historical fiction was selected from the many entries for the 2012 Historical Novel Society Short Story Award. Jonathan Pegg, Literary Agent, and Gillian Green, Publisher, Ebury/ Random House placed the three finalists. All 12 writers showed outstanding ability. The winner was The Beggar at the Gate by Jasmina Svenne. The runners up were The Pearl of Blenheim by Elizabeth Philips and A Funeral March Fit for a Prince by Anna Belfrage.

“We were really impressed by the standard, as well as working as short stories, all the shortlisted entries would have worked as a part of a far larger whole, … and it was a whole that we really wanted to carry on reading”. – Gillian Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Collection 5 Oct 2013

A good short story is a gem. A well written short story can be a small masterpiece. This collection is a delicious read. Each story is unique, has its classic turning point, summons up a different era which provides the story's wall paper and each little work of story telling art contains well constructed engaging and memorable characters. Here, there is always an emotional pulse that makes one want to know more even though each tale is satisfyingly complete in itself. I cannot single out one because to do so would be at the expense of another and they are all great reads. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of short stories 23 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This collection of stories is quite a mixed bag but if you love short stories, then this book will have something for you. Each story is written by a different author and is based in a different time in history, and so each one comes as a surprise as you have no idea how it will unfold. I'd recommend it for any lover of historical fiction, and also for anyone who is learning to write short stories. There are plenty of styles and ideas here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memorable reading 9 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
How refreshing to be able to read a good selection of stories with historical themes. There was excellent reading in each. I enjoyed discovering the characters, several of whom are still there in the memory several weeks later. The Pearl of Blenheim, the unfortunate Axel von Fersen, Mistress Suttell of Poplar... with many others, all come to life on the page. But (a seventeenth century setting is always appealing!) Jacob, stoically enduring the Little Ice Age, and struggling with terrible choices beside the Thames without losing his humanity in the process, is to me the most memorable. My fingers burned with cold in sympathy!

Disclaimer - I wrote one of the stories in this collection, but as none of the authors receive any royalties I thought I could be forgiven for leaving a review as a commentary on the other 11 stories in the collection.

There is enough variation of both era and subject matter here to ensure that interest is held right to the last. Some stories focus on well known historical people, others on fictional characters, some draw inspiration from the setting or season. Most concentrate on a moment in time. I enjoyed them all.

Highly recommended.
