Product Description

Product Description

An ideal book for gardeners who want to encourage pollinating insects, this guide helps you choose plants that bees will love and also provides information on planting and maintaining a beautiful traditional garden. As well as well-known bee favourites such as lavender, hollyhock and rosemary, this comprehensive A - Z includes over 300 other climers, shrubs, trees, vegitables and fruits. Each is accompanied by cultivation notes, flowering months, recommended soil type and sun and shade requirements. A comprehensive guide which will benefit both gardener and bee-keeper.

From the Publisher

This book is particularly relevant today in these times of falling bee numbers and potential loss of species.

Pretty Good 25 Oct 2009
By Ian
Format:Paperback
The book comprises an A-Z of bee-friendly plants placed between a short introduction and a section providing a brief, but excellent, summmary of the practice of beekeeping. Many, but not all, of the plants are shown in colour photographs.

For the bee-aware knowledgeable gardener, I'm sure this would be a valuable reference book. For the beekeeper like myself without a deep gardening interest yet looking to make their garden more attractive to bees, the A-Z format doesn't work so well. The addition of some simple tables, categorising the plants under e.g shrubs, ground-cover, climbers etc would have made linking a site in the garden with a suitable bee-friendly plant much quicker than having to trawl through the A-Z each time.

Nevertheless a useful, authoritative book that I'm happy to have on my shelves.

I wanted to know what plants to grow in my garden in order to sustain our beehives full of busy bees and I got it in spades with this beautiful book. It is easy to use being alphabetical, and a delight to browse through. After all the snowy weather a few of the mature plants in my garden have perished but I know exactly what i will replace them with thanks to this book

Plants are listed alphabetically, and there are photos for many of them. Ted Hooper (sadly, no longer with us, having died only recently) shows his depth of experience in the many personal notes that he adds to the regular botanical descriptions. As a beekeeper, I will be planting many of the species that he recommends.
