Product Description

fRoots, (Ian Anderson), May 2008

This mesmerising debut album deserves to give Mor Karbasi one of the world music hits of 2008...an incredibly flexible voice.

(4 stars) Mixes medieval Sephardic songs with a twist of flamenco..."Shecharhoret" is a traditionl wedding song in Hebrew and Latin.

(4 stars) Establishes Karbasi as one of the great young divas of the global music scene...has her own, highly individual approach...

The Guardian, (Robin Denselow), April 25, 2008

...Her voice is remarkable...mixing delicacy, power and control...moves between rousing songs and spine-tingling subtlety...one of the albums of the year.

bridging 500 years 19 May 2008
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Intriguingly, there are 6 old songs (mostly traditional Ladino) and 7 new ones which she co-wrote with her mother and a multi-talented guy called Joe Taylor (also producer, guitars, bass, oud, backing vocals!) . But the whole package fits so perfectly that you never realise there's a gap of 500 years between one half and the other.

Apart from the voice, I also love the haunting recorders. And there is something about the melodies of these songs from the tradition of the Sephardim (i.e. the Jews who lived in Spain before 1492, when the place was still multi-cultural) that is distinct from all other music I know. For instance the recorder motif in La galana, which I've figured out how to play on the flute -- you wouldn't find that kind of melody anywhere else.

The earlier reviews gave me a sense of the sound one might expect - and they were spot on. A voice that comes from out of the ages of time. A sound that can be enjoyed by any with soul and a love of music. I am a classical music fan. I buy instrumental music, no singing - but this is wonderful. The voice is always melodic as it moves and twists and occupies a whole range of spaces across the spectrum of octaves. The instrumental support is excellent. In fact I have to stop and remember if there is any - the singing and instruments merge and blend, the voice is an instrument. It doesn't matter that you can or can't understand a word the woman is singing - the inflections in the voice convey all.
You can guess I like this music!

Mor Karbasi 12 Nov 2008
Format:Audio CD
Much of this music was heard first at a time when all known languages of the travelled world could be heard in the bazar of Cordoba. There is nothing museum-like about this record though. The feel of the music is more like gitano flamenco.
The stunning 6th track will have your heart mis a beat. The 10th track have the violin and flute turn oriental, and you are spellbound. And this is only Mor Karbasis first release. Expectations are skyhigh now.
