3.0 out of 5 stars the fast way to weight loss 5 July 2007
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Another audio in the companions chronicles series, wherein actors who played doctor who companions in years gone by read talking book style stories featuring their doctor who character. This time it's the turn of lalla ward, who reprises the role of the second romana, who she played alongside tom baker from 1979-1980. As with the rest of this range, the story is a little over an hour long, and has one guest actor. This one is divided into four episodes of varying length.

In the story the fourth doctor and romana and K9 arrive at a health spa on an alien world, and find someone is taking making people slim and beautiful to rather dangerous extremes..

the first episode is great fun and very much in keeping with the style of the tv stories of that time, in that it's bizarre and teeters on the edge of farce without quite going that far.

In episodes two and three romana is alone and investigating things, and these aren't quite as good as part one, as they tend to be exposition heavy and go round in circles, romana going from one dangerous trap to another. although there are good moments for the supporting characters in these episodes, so it's not all wasted.

the doctor reappears in part four, and things then return to the style of part one. the doctor getting such a splendid monologue that you really wish tom baker was in this so you could hear him say it.

A fun little audio and very much in keeping with the style of that particular who era, although the middle two episodes aren't as good as parts one and four. It would work a little better if parts two and three were merged into one. But it's still quite entertaining

4.0 out of 5 stars Another decent Companion tale 18 April 2011
By Tony Jones VINE™ VOICE
This fun romp through the world of alien health farms, chocolate cake and doughnuts is great for Lalla Ward (Romana) in that she is completely credible as the lead character and would have solved and survived without any help from the Doctor. This also manages the trick of portraying the fourth Doctor through dialogue even though he isn't there.

A good end to a good first season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Light-hearted Who 1 Oct 2009
The companion chronicles series of audios is proving itself to be an excellent range of stories, almost all of them perfectly recreating the style of their respective eras. The Beautiful People is no exception. It's season 17 of Dr Who to a tee. Lalla Ward reads the story perfectly, recapturing her performance as Romana exactly, the sound effects and music are spot on and the story, while very light hearted and humourous is still gripping and never outstays its welcome. Season 17 was one of my favurite periods of Dr Who and this audio adventure has certainly done it justice. I can't wait for the next one! Highly recommended.
