Product Description

Product Description

This is the candid and unabridged story of the Beatles as told by the insiders who worked, recorded and toured with the group from the Hamburg days to the bitter end. This in-depth book features a meticulously researched and comprehensive array of inside sources. Here, at last, is the whole uncensored story of the life and work of the Beatles. The book is fully illustrated throughout and features interviews with those who knew and worked with the Beatles throughout their remarkable career.

Included are the frank recollections of Pete Best, the group’s first drummer. Other Beatles collaborators include Tony Barrow (the group’s publicist from the Liverpool days to Abbey Road), Alan Williams (the group’s first manager), and Bill Harry of Merseybeat magazine (who helped to break the band into the big time). Neil Innes of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band recalls the experience of making The Magical Mystery Tour. Also featured is the last filmed interview with the late Beatles engineer Norman Smith.

This is a collection of both new interviews and extracts from interviews recently given by people who were very close to the Beatles. Sadly, there is no contents page and I could not find a list of which interviews are original ones. However, saying that, the interviews included are very interesting and, although offering little to those fans who have read many books about the band, would be of great interest to new fans.

The list of people interviewed in the book are: Pete Best, Allan Williams, Tony Bramwell, Tony Barrow, Norman Smith, Geoffrey Ellis, Sid Bernstein, Andy White and Neil Innes.

Most of the people interviewed are asked about Andy White playing on "Love me Do"/"P.S. I Love You" and about why Pete Best was asked to leave the band. Pete Best himself denies he was not a good enough drummer, claiming, "at that time I was reputed to be one of the best drummers in the world..." As much as I admire Pete Best I am not sure where this claim comes from. If you are interested in the Pete Best story, you can do little better than turn to Spencer Leigh's book Drummed Out!: The Sacking of Pete Best (sadly no longer in print, but there are second hand copies available). Haymans Green by the Pete Best Band is also well worth a listen, with lots of references to his days in the Beatles.

I always enjoy reading interviews by Beatles insiders and, although there is little that is new in these interviews, this is a nice collection. Many of the people interviewed have written their own memoirs about their time with the band, but if you haven't read that widely, you should enjoy this. The interviews with Tony Bramwell and Geoffrey Ellis were particularly interesting and this was a nice collection.
