Book Description

16 Aug 2012
Hervé Bourhis, creator of The Little Book of Rock, turns his unique graphic talents to the legend of The Beatles, told from the very beginning. Bourhis visual imagination illuminates the individual lives of each band member from their pre-Beatles youth to what would become a rock band of phenomenal worldwide fame. All of the epic details of their story are vividly evoked: the triumphs, the quarrels, the supreme musical creativity and of course the inevitable break-up. The story then goes on to follow the personal destinies of John, Paul, George and Ringo, four Liverpool lads who were by turns ambitious, clever, facetious, arrogant, down-to-earth and supremely talented. Theirs was the ultimate rock band story and Hervé Bourhis has done it and them full justice in this superb and exuberant graphic biography.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice twist on a familiar story 1 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was pleasantly surprised when I first chanced upon this excellent book; the story of the Beatles has been told so many times in so many ways that I hadn't expected such a fresh treatment; the graphics/illustrations are dynamic and entertaining and although there are one or two factual mistakes, this doesn't spoil the enjoyment and overall it's a great addition to any Beatles book collection - well worth the money. A strong and worthwhile publication.

My only gripe, as usual, was with the inadequate packaging used by Amazon as the book arrived dented; is it too much to expect that a book should arrive in the same condition as if you'd bought it in the High Street and carried it home in a bag? I don't expect my books to remain pristine, but if anyone is going to inflict damage, I would like it to be me. Come on, Amazon - too often the box used is too large and inadequately packed and padded, allowing movement inside the package, which leads to scuffed lamination, dented ends to the spine and crushed corners on the covers. This seems to be the norm and not the exception - I'm now only surprised when an Amazon book arrives in the condition it left the warehouse. I would suggest a larger and more varied selection of boxes and bubble-wrap is made available to the packers. Am I on my own here or does anyone else have this problem? The pricing is usually competitive, but increasingly I'm asking myself whether it's worth chancing it, especially if buying to give as a present.

4.0 out of 5 stars Art for Arts Sake 2 Jan 2013
By Richard
Format:Paperback
The illustrations are fine all taken from photos but the book loses a star because Bourhis can't stop being a rock critic
He more or less covers everything up to 2010 though misses out Mike McGear whose McCartney produced album was made during the Wings era.
Also deserving of mention should be the Russian produced series of 20 CDs of Beatles and solo Beatles novelties

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD GRAPHIC ARTWORK THAT TELLS THE BEATLES STORY 27 Dec 2012
By Stuart Jefferson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a neat little book that lays out the story of The Beatles. It begins with the birth of each band member, the era, the formation of the band, all the ups and downs, the dissolution of the band, and finally, what the remaining members are doing. The time span is 1940 to 2009. This book floats somewhere between 3 and 4 "stars", depending on how much you know about the band and the individual members. This gets 4 "stars" for Herve Bourhis' graphic artwork-the story itself Beatles fans will already know.

In 156 pages (not counting the pages not related to the story), Herve Bourhis has put together an accurate, interesting, and informative story of The Beatles. His artwork is what makes this book interesting-his drawings give the story a real depth, even if you know the entire story of the band. While reading the text that runs through the story, Bourhis' drawings give a slightly different, more alive viewpoint about the band and the four people in it.

Bourhis is a fan of The Beatles-as he says-"I always return to them when I don't know what else to listen to." Perhaps that sounds like a sideways compliment, but at least you have some idea where he stands regarding the group. And at least you know he isn't another fawning fan who only sees what he wants to see. And that brings us back to the book. It's the story told straightforwardly, which is what it should be. But his artwork keeps us from taking everything too seriously.

By now, most everybody knows The Beatles' story-both collectively and each individual member. Fans of graphic books/biographies/Beatles collectors will probably want to take a look at this. Is it a necessary addition to your Beatles library? That depends-if you're a deep fan/collector-then yes. If you're a more casual fan, who already knows all he (or she) wants to know about The Beatles-then probably not.

But for some reason I like this book. Yes, I like certain graphic books-biographies/overviews/etc. Plus, I just like looking at the pictures-they do add depth to the subject. And it's obvious that a lot of thought and some reverence went into this book. Bourhis' graphic style is both funny and informative. But ultimately it's a fun book to read-plain and simple. So if you want the story of The Beatles, that will put a smile on your face-done in a graphic style-this is the book for you.
