5.0 out of 5 stars Moulettes "Bear's Revenge" 5 Aug 2012
By Maddie
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This album is outstanding. I can't stop listening, the more I listen the more I love it!! The instruments, violin, cello, basoon, double bass, guitar and drums and beautiful vocal harmonies expose very fine musicianship indeed. Each track is a work of art, with influences from gypsy, classical, folk, klesmer, choral. Always strongly melodic and varied from upbeat dance tunes to slow and haunting, this music is unique, exciting, beautiful and really really mesmerising.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets 8 July 2012
Format:MP3 Download
Some reviews I've seen of this CD have suggested that it is not quite up to the standard of the first. In my view that's simply not the case. In many ways it's an interesting progression - perhaps more upbeat, uptempo (for instance the first two tracks) and a little less quirky (in the best possible sense) than the first but in no way of lesser quality. The instrumental range seems to have been extended - some interesting extension of the use of drums for example - great production, and the singing is as tight, exciting and beautifully executed as ever. Well worth five stars - it's a great listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get them on Jools Holland ASAP 13 Oct 2012

I first heard this band when Mike Harding played 'Uca's Dance' on his Radio 2 show in October 2012. I checked out a few more tracks on YouTube and was completely blown away especially by the song 'Sing Unto Me'. However it soon becomes apparent that the showcasing uptempo opener is not characteristic of the rest of the album. That is not to say that the rest is any way weaker as every track is very different and it's so refreshing to see a young band revelling in playing this sort of music in an age of X Factor pap. They have obviously honed their musicianship through years of hard graft and have a whole host of influences from classical, jazz, rock and klezmer which they have blended together into a bewitching concoction of instrumentation, singing and harmonising.

Although everyone in the band is extremely talented I do love the violin solos and Fairport Convention's best albeit very brief incarnation was when they had Sandy Denny's vocals and Dave Swarbrick's exquisite fiddle in the line up. I am also very pleased I bought the CD rather than downloaded it as a MP3 because a lot of care and effort has gone into producing the lavish artwork. I like to read lyrics as well which in this case are literate with some songs leaning towards an Angela Carter like fairyland.

British folk seems to be in a very healthy state at the moment and I was lucky enough to see The Unthanks live last year. I very much look forward to catching The Moulettes live and I wish them every future success as they thoroughly deserve it.
