Product Description

This book looks delicious (Philip Pullman )

. . . the feeling of a classic. (The Sunday Times )

'Vulliamy is the daughter of the great children's author and illustrator Shirley Hughes and there's a faint family resemblance to Hughes's style and eye for detail about her drawings, particularly the beautiful way she captures a child's expression with a few strokes.'

(The Observer ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful story & illustrations 4 Dec 2011
By jojo
My 3 year old daughter initially borrowed this book from the library and didn't want to take it back as she enjoyed it so much. She loves counting the items of food and 'reading' the large bold words on some pages e.g. No, No, No! There is also a good underlying message that children should help their Mums - not sure she picks up on that but good to try to reinforce it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bing Bong! 5 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
We cannot remember the Bear with Sticky Paws not existing in our house. Bing Bong! There he is on the doorstep. This is the first in a very sweet series of books. Lovely illustrations (well, she IS the daughter of the fabulous Shirley Hughes) and lots of opportunities for counting things. Pearl is very naughty, but the bear is always naughtier...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bear with Sticky Paws - reverse psychology? 13 Oct 2009
This review is for the 'ORCHARD BOOKS' edition.

Durable hardback covers open to 30 high quality shiny pages about a grumpy rather disobedient little girl called PEARL, who likes to say:

'No!'..............a lot!

That is, until a small white tufty bear arrives on the doorstep...with his suitcase and reverses the trend....eventually!
Whilst Mum is out, this bear is more than happy to indulge in a spot of breakfast and lunch and tea.... with sticky paws everywhere.........as the duo make a lot of mess in between meal-breaks.....

* playing
* hiding and sliding
* leaping and climbing
* dressing up
* swimming

By the end, the bear is the one who is decidedly negative.... and....just before Mum gets back, he and his suitcase make a convenient exit!
Mum is not terribly impressed with 'THE MESS', but as the previously negative young Pearl becomes considerably more..... well........positive........the ending is sweet and makes a point, in more ways than one!

The text is in a variety of fonts and suitably enhanced in places, FOR EFFECT!

Example of text:

'There's a girl called Pearl and she's being grumpy, stamping her feet and slamming the door.
She says,
"I don't want all this breakfast!" and throws down her spoon.
"No, I won't wash my face.
No, I won't bush my hair.
No, I won't get dressed....

No!.... No!.... No!.... "

Until Mum calls out.....

...and..... all this before Mum goes out!

Beautifully illustrated throughout, in pastels, this is a super book and destined to be a classic, in my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hit with my little sticky pawed cubs 29 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
For a lover of picture books, I can't believe we hadn't read any books by Clara Vulliamy before now. This has now been rectified and The Bear with Sticky Paws is a big hit in this household, especially with my youngest. With two daughters (aged almost-five & two & a half), I can definitely relate to having a grumpy girl (I'm sure it applies to sons just as much but I don't have that experience) and I think for my youngest the story is really resonating with her burdgeoning independence so it's a "read dat!" choice over and over (it's not midday and I think I've read it six times today - toddlers!)

I adore the art, my mummy heart is completely touched with Pearl's grumpy face and I love that it ends with a hug and a kiss (especially as I get one from my toddler as we read that bit!) My younger daughter loves the repetition: And - oh No! and my elder daughter likes counting all the different things that the bear eats (proving to me that there were not, in fact, too many ice creams to count!)

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone with toddlers, anyone with daughters (or sons!), anyone who has been a daughter, anyone who likes cute bears, anyone who loves picture books...
