Everyone who loves cinema, and especially the French nouvelle-vague (new wave) of the late 1950s and 1960s should watch this film. I have now seen it three times and see something fresh and new every time, as Agnes Varda looks back over her life beginning in Belgium before WWII, with extracts from her films, her dreams and her loves, viewed with benign detachment. This is an autobiography like no other. Anyone who watches this will be drawn to explore her earlier films, all made on a shoestring that puts Hollywood to shame.

This is an original and compelling film that does not waste a minute. It could be defined simply as a woman's reflection on her life in art, but it is so much more than that. The composition is like a moving painting; the images are coruscating, witty and moving. A deeply personal film that is a testament to the authenticity of its maker - compelling, reflective and humane. A gem.

For anyone old enough to remember France in the 1960s and 1970s, or anyone who loved the film "Cleo de 5 a 7" (for me the best of all the Nouvelle Vague films) this is a beautiful wander down memory lane. I'm less sure that it has anything to offer to the young untravelled Brit of today.
