Book Description

Alan loves the beach. More than a weekend respite, it is his home, his refuge, his sanctuary. And for most of the year, he strolls the sand in blissful solitude, letting nature--and no one else--touch him. But spring has given way to summer, and soon, the annual invasion of vacationers and tourists will subdivide the beach with blankets, umbrellas, and chairs, depriving Alan of his privacy and seclusion--the fundamental touchstones of his life.

Resigned to endure another seasonal onslaught of beach-goers, Alan believes there is nothing he can do but prepare for the worst.

But fate has other plans.

Delivered to him on the crest of a rogue wave, the strange object appears to have no purpose, no practical use--until Alan accidentally discovers what waits inside. Now he must attempt to unravel an ageless mystery, unaware that the final outcome will change his life, and the beach, forever.

In the companion novella "Short Time," you'll meet a respectable but bored middle-class executive, who exchanges his future for six months of excess and extravagance, only to find out the price he must pay for his hedonistic indulgence is beyond anything he could have imagined.

This kindle ebook is an adult fiction sci-fi fantasy laced with a supernatural theme. The suspense thriller "Short Time" is included and featured as a bonus novella. These contemporary fiction novellas by indie author Jaye Frances offer a frightening look at choices and consequences. "The Beach"  can be downloaded as a free kindle ebook through the Amazon Prime program. The stories contain mature language and situations and are best suited for an adult reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Story! 26 Aug. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I just loved this story! I saw the capsule, I saw the characters, I saw the beach on and on and on. Jaye Frances is one very talented lady! The story did not turn out quite like I expected, but in no way am I disappointed. I could not have guessed the true nature of this story and I'm glad for that. I so much enjoyed this story. I haven't read her other stories but I most assuredly will. I believe I've become a fan! If you haven't read this story you are missing out. The protagonist is not a nice guy and one day he is confronted by a stranger with the deal of a life time. After some negotiations the deal is sealed to both parties satisfaction. But, after the stranger is gone our protagonist isn't so sure he got the better part of the deal.

What can happen to a person when they get rid of different races of people? How is it done? Where do you start? Do you just do away with the ones currently in existence? Or do you have to go back to the origin of each race to make sure you've rid the world of those you find unsavory? One man receives the answer to all of those questions.

I just knew there was something about this story I would get a kick out of! It has been a while since a story tickled me just right. So original! It is a great short story terrifically told It will leave you with a snide little smile, a sinful feeling of satisfaction and completely entertained. Tell everyone about it! I am.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and very sweet 24 Dec. 2012
By Herkiel
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Alan lives on the beach. He loves this beach with a passion and considers it his own private space. He hates the day visitors who spoil his peace with their loud music and their fast food picnics and wishes the beach could be his alone. One day, he finds something washed up by the sea which offers him the chance to make his wish come true.

This is a quite a short story but enchanting and subtle with its beautifully lyrical writing and its twist on the old genie-in-a-lamp tale. Well worth the read..

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite good take on two well known tales 4 Nov. 2012
By Robert
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book consists of two short stories. Both are well trodden paths since the time of the dinosaurs. In The Beach, a seaside resident tires of the seasonal influx of tourists. He is presented with an opportunity by a mysterious entity from a floating container to change the world. Most of the story is in the form of a conversation abut the negotiation between the protagonist and the genie over the price and consequences of his actions. There is not much action and the genie, although portrayed as having an English voice, reads a little like butler fluent in a second language. But the story is fine although not deep or suspising.

The second tale is concerns four days in a cell of a man who sells his existence to the government in exchange for six months of sybaritic living. Again no surprises but it had the potential to become a decent book. The story is again about the price and negotiation for a pact with the devil. It becomes clear that the Agency, once it has its man in custody can and will do anything it wants with him.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Short Story 7 Sept. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This story tells of a man named Alan, that has a home on the beach. Alan is retired and enjoys his time on the beach that he thinks of as his. He is a very grumpy, cynical man who prefers to be alone and becomes very angry with the people who spend time on the beach. He feels they are too loud, and they litter his beloved beach and they just cause too many problems for him. Alan comes across a container one day that he brings home. HE finds out it contains a "genie" that comes out to negotiate a deal with Alan. Unfortunately Alan finds out too late what happens when he makes a deal with this genie name Efil.
Jaye Frances once again writes a story that is so descriptive that I felt like I was right there on Alan's beach with him. If there was a genre called science fiction fantasy, that is what I would say this book falls into. One thing that I really appreciate in this authors stories is the fact that when you are finished reading the book she discusses where she gets her references and the deeper meaning of the story. When reading a Jaye Frances book, I never finish with just a story in my head, I usually have learned some kind of life lesson and a little bit of history on top of that.

2.0 out of 5 stars Spin on a genie in the bottle 6 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book I downloaded because it was free, it it cost anything I wouldn't bother. Basically this guy finds a "genie in a lamp" but this genie is a bit mean and only gives him one wish. And the wish doesn't turn out for the best. It was well written but the character was not engaging at all, I actually disliked him from the beginning.

I wouldn't bother reading this.
