Book Description

22 July 2010

'FOR SALE: a rare opportunity to purchase a beach hut on the spectacular Everdene Sands. "The Shack" has been in the family for fifty years, and was the first to be built on this renowned stretch of golden sand...'

Jane Milton doesn't want to sell her beloved beach hut, which has been the heart of so many family holidays and holds so many happy memories. But when her husband dies, leaving her with an overwhelming string of debts, she has no choice but to sell.

THE BEACH HUT follows the stories of the people who own the beach huts, families who come to Everdene each year, people who fall in - or out of - love, remembering their pasts, or trying to forget them...

Veronica Henry has brilliantly drawn together the comings and goings of life at the beach huts over one long, hot, lazy summer...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beach-y read! 1 Mar 2011
By Chloe S "Chick Lit Chloe" TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Jane Milton's beach hut, also known as 'The Shack' has been in her family for many generations, but when her husband dies and leaves her with huge debts, she knows she has no choice but to finally sell the hut and make a bit of money to live on. She's worried about the reaction of her 3 sons, but more about leaving the glorious beaches of Everdene for good after one summer party. As summer descends on Everdere once more, the residents of the huts flock to the beach for a few days peace, but some end up with more than ever bargained for. For Roy, the man who has helped look after the beach huts since he was a little lad, he's extremely sad to hear that Jane might be leaving for good. Are a few beach goers going to get more than they bargained for this summer?

The book begins with Roy, the resident of Everdene who has been looking after the Beach Huts for many years and knows not only the huts, but the residents of them too. Roy's clearly got feelings for Jane, and I love how this story develops as the book progresses, it's very touching and is such a sweet story. As we get to know Roy and Jane, and the tale of their childhood friendship, things become clearer and then the book moves on in another direction, following Jane in her current life juggling her finances, family and expectations. I was hooked by the end of the first chapter, and I knew then it'd be a book I wouldn't want to put down.

It then begins to tell the stories of the owners and residents of the beach huts for each chapter. I think the chapter names were the name of the beach huts themselves which I think is a lovely touch, and certainly made it good to try and decipher which sort of people would have a beach hut with that name!

5.0 out of 5 stars relaxing summer read 5 Sep 2010
By S. A. Broadhurst TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
When i picked up The Beach Hut i was expecting a book full of short stories, each story being about one of the beach huts, however, as i continued to read each story through the book i found the individual 'stories' all intertwined with each other.
The setting for The Beach Hut sounds gorgeous, a real British seaside, with a row of colourful beach huts owned by individuals who would spend their holidays living beside the seaside. I was unaware that people would 'live' there for a week, i thought they were glorified changing rooms where the owners would stay in hotels or bed and breakfasts at night.
The characters in the book were from many different lifestyles and each had their own story to tell; alcohol addiction, illicit affairs were just two of the reasons the beach huts were so popular. I felt I was a part of the Everdene community, learning about each family, their way of life and the problems they had and may be hiding.
i love veronica Henry's books and have read a number of her back catalogue and enjoyed this one just as much, however, i found the style of this book to be different from her previous books.
The book is a lovely holiday read and i could see myself sitting on a beach or in the sunshine reading it.

i am now looking forward to veronica Henry's new book being released in October 2o10.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good holiday read 22 Aug 2010
By F
Format:Paperback
This is my first book by Veronica Henry, and it was recommended to me by a friend. I'm pleased to have discovered this author now, as I very much enjoyed this book. I found the setting of the stories was described very well, and I could easily imagine what the beach huts and town looked like. I very much enjoyed how each chapter related to a different persons individual story, but thought the small links and hints between each very good. Each chapter was a satisfactory length for what was involved - it managed to tell the story of each character in a believable depth and therefore I felt drawn in and compeled to read on. No chapter was 'less interesting' than the rest, as each characters tale was appealing and it made me want to read on. I thought the conclusion was well put together, and the final two chapters brought everything together nicely. Overall, this is a perfect 'beach book'. It doesnt take long to read and is easy to pick up from where you left off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get ready for summer! 25 May 2012
By NikkiG
Format:Paperback
I've never read any books by Veronica Henry before. This is for no particular reason other than there are too many books in the world and not enough time! I'm so glad I read it - it's fabulous. The main storyline running through it (a family's attempt to hold on to a beach hut that's been with them for generations) is very engaging, but I also enjoyed the other characters' journeys just as much - I loved the way all the stories were intertwined. The characters are very authentic and the flow of the story unfolds at a good pace.

You could taste, touch, feel, smell and see summer, it really has got a brilliant sense of place... but it's not just a great summer read, it's a captivating story about love, loss, hope and moving forward.

A very well written book and I will definitely read more from this author.

Look out for the food and cocktail recipes at the back - an added bonus!

4.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously entertaining! 21 Nov 2011
By Best Books To Read TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I only picked up my first Veronica Henry book towards the end of 2010 which was the first book featured in the Honeycote series. That was quickly followed by the others the Honeycote Series, and following that I just haven't picked up another. I really enjoyed the Honeycote books, but they weren't books that left a lasting impression.

I started the book with an open mind and within a few pages, I was hooked. Jane Milton is the main focus of the story and before long we learn that her husband has died leaving her in serious debt. The Beach Hut in Everdene is the hut that her family have used for years, only this time she is visiting for the last time, before she is forced to sell up. Quite early on in the book, the reader is transported back to when Jane was younger, which I was instantly gripped with. However, just as I was getting my teeth into that, Veronica takes us to a new chapter, a new hut, and a glimpse into somebody else's life.

There is a huge selection of characters built up around the Everdene Huts and to be quite honest although I was surprised, it made such a refreshing change to see glimpses of numerous characters, but with enough information to whet the appetite for the next character. Usually, so many people in one story would put me off, but this book does the opposite.

Although Jane and her family are the focal point, we get to witness many different situations and scenarios which are all playing out around the Milton family. The character of Jane Milton was a great one, a woman who has been there and seen it all before, but somehow is managing to take it in her stride and not become too bitter.
