5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful 22 July 2011
By Lincs Reader TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Set in Cornwall, the heroine of the story is Evie - a thirty-something woman whose life is in a bit of a rut. She's the black sheep of the family, her sisters are both successful, gorgeous, well-groomed, married with children and have great careers. Evie goes from one temp job to another, not really knowing what she wants to do, her long-term relationship with geeky Matthew has gone a bit stale - the only great thing in her life is Saul, Matthew's young son who Evie adores.
Evie is devastated when her aunt Jo is killed in a car accident. Jo always believed in Evie, never criticised her and allowed her to be herself. Evie spent many happy holidays at Jo's beach cafe in Cornwall. The whole family are shocked and surprised to learn that Jo has left the cafe to Evie. Everyone expects Evie to sell up - after all when has she ever made a success of anything? Evie is determined to prove them wrong.
This is a fabulous read. Evie is one of those really likeable characters that you soon grow to love, she reminded me a little of Bridget Jones - daft, funny but very caring. Sometimes she makes huge mistakes, sometimes she does things that are incredibly annoying, but you can't help but love her!
Lucy Diamond is very good at creating some great characters, really human and believable and her descriptions of the Cornwall village and beach were fabulous.
Ok, there may be a smidgeon of predictability along the way, but I'm not complaining - everyone needs a little romance in their lives and Evie deserves it more than most.
I enjoyed every page of The Beach Cafe, it has all the ingredients for the perfect summer read and I can't wait to read more of Lucy Diamond's novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect feel-good book 29 Oct 2011
By D. Jones #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love Lucy Diamond's books; they always have likeable characters, a great story and a wonderful feel-good factor - perfect for curling up with on the sofa for a few hours.

Evie, the main character is endearing. She has always felt a failure against the successes of her two sisters, also in her job and of late in her ever increasingly stale relationship with Matthew. I did want to push her into action to give him the boot so many times but it was easy to understand her fear of life without him.

Out of the blue Evie receives the unexpected and awful news that her favourite aunt from Cornwall has unexpectedly died. Evie not only finds herself having to deal with her own grief and feelings of loss but having to make the life changing decision as to what to do in the long-term about her aunt's pride and joy, her beach side cafe.

Lucy Diamond writes so well that it is easy to get caught up in her characters and the predicaments they face. I really felt for Evie when she found herself ostracised by some of the locals. I wanted to scream at her to get some backbone and deal with the staff who were walking all over her. Later this was offset by a warm fuzzy feeling when everyone rallied round to save the future of the cafe from a disastrous turn of events.

This really is a wonderful book and if you are in the mood for a bit of romance, with the beautiful backdrop of a beach in Cornwall, and the dream that many of us secretly harbour of running a small cafe then you are in for a treat with this book.

Be aware though that once you start to read this book you won't want to put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely feel good read 4 Jun 2011
By cathy
Format:Paperback
I have read all of Lucy Diamond's books and loved them all so this new book was no disappointment to me. I immediately loved Evie and her grappling's with inheriting her Aunties café in Cornwall. She is torn between leaving her life in Oxford for a new life by the sea. The descriptions of Cornwall are beautiful and I found the book really funny too. I highly recommend this book for a lovely holiday read, I read it in four hours! Just great to gobble down in one sitting. Looking forward to the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great summer read - ended to soon! 11 July 2011
By Missy
Format:Paperback
I gobbled this book in 3 days on my holiday which was funnily enough was in cornwall where this book is based. I disagree with people who say it took to long to get to the point...i found the plot well spaced out and really identified with the main character though as times i thought she was to nice.

All in all a great summer read on the beach...will be reading more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book!!! 8 July 2011
By Pixie
Format:Paperback
It is Friday night and all I wanted to do was read the rest of this book. I love Lucy Diamonds writing style and just couldn't resist buying this book and I am so pleased that I did. I don't usually read a lot of 'chic-lit' and didn't have hugely high expectations but I have definately been impressed. It's funny, heart warming, uplifting and entertaining. I will be buying more of her books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Made me want to visit!!! 23 Feb 2012
By Joanne
Format:Kindle Edition
The main reason i liked this book was because it really made me want to holiday in Cornwall. Lucy Diamond paints an ideal picture in your mind of the cornish coast and the way of life down there!!! I loved the characters and the story line was beliveable and had more depth than lots of 'girly' books. It is a good book to relax with- perfect for holidays. All of the food, cakes and coffee mentioned in this book make you want to read it with a coffee and a cornish scone!!!! Lovely, lighthearted, easy to read. xxx
