5.0 out of 5 stars Just the sort of book Beach Boys fans needed! 31 Aug 2004
Format:Paperback
To my knowledge, this is the first attempt at documenting every move the Beach Boys did on and off stage with in-depth coverage of studio sessions, TV and radio broadcasts, concerts and the odd trivial fact (did you know that Mike bought a pipe at a local market in Copenhagen, Denmark on November 3, 1966?). Set lists are given for many concerts, as well as news reports and reviews from the period. Catalogue numbers, track listings and release dates for all official releases are also included so you'll pretty much get everything covered in this book.

As an added bonus, the book is filled with black & white pictures of the boys at work in the studio and on stage, many that I've never seen before.

If you've seen Doug Hinman's similar book on the Kinks ('All Day and All of the Night', also on Backbeat Books), you'll be familiar with the design and layout in this book. Everything is in chronological order and easy to read. Maybe that's why this book is called 'The definitive DIARY..'.

It's not a book designed to be read from cover to cover, but it's great as reference. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST for every Beach Boys Fan! 27 Aug 2004
By Zander
Format:Paperback
At last! A book that accounts possibly every detail about the Beach Boys from the formation of the group to Brian Wilson's triumphant return to touring and the 2004 performances of Smile (the long lost album that was abandonned in 1967), this book is a delight from cover to cover.

Keith Badman shows his love for the Californian group and gives them a book that gives justice to a past that many have overlooked in recent times as the general public do not realise that the Beach Boys were just as, if not more creative in the 1970s as they were in the 1960s.

Highlights of the book include unpublished photos, setlists from many concerts, quotes, news articles, television appearances, session logs and a lot more.

This book is a cross between Brad Elliot's "Surf's Up! The Beach Boys on Record" for its accuracy in record releases and chart positions, and Barry Miles "The Beatles Diary" for its layout in terms of the day-to-day activities of the group with notable dates outlined.

I would recommend this book to all those who would like to know what Brian, Dennis, Carl, Mike, Al and Bruce were doing in certain time periods with regards to performing and recording rather than those who would like to read the book in a non-fictional way.

A fantastic book and a great achievement to Keith Badman!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic amount of information 25 Jan 2008
By R. Kent
Format:Paperback
I'm currently reading this book cover to cover (long train journey) and I am certainly finding it fascinating, the chronological order of events really brings home Brian's mental state when working on Good Vibrations and the Smile album and you can see how it all just falls apart, he's too much of a perfectionist and just loses track of the bits of songs scattered around the place.

It's not just about Brian of course and so the book follows Bruce on his promotional tours of London and how Elvis was recording next door and the group were in awe of meeting him (Brian was too nervous!) and how Carl and Dennis take over the song production for Wild Honey.

Little snippets like this make this a great read

Throughly recommend it.
