As an added bonus, the book is filled with black & white pictures of the boys at work in the studio and on stage, many that I've never seen before.
If you've seen Doug Hinman's similar book on the Kinks ('All Day and All of the Night', also on Backbeat Books), you'll be familiar with the design and layout in this book. Everything is in chronological order and easy to read. Maybe that's why this book is called 'The definitive DIARY..'.
It's not a book designed to be read from cover to cover, but it's great as reference. Highly recommended!
Keith Badman shows his love for the Californian group and gives them a book that gives justice to a past that many have overlooked in recent times as the general public do not realise that the Beach Boys were just as, if not more creative in the 1970s as they were in the 1960s.
Highlights of the book include unpublished photos, setlists from many concerts, quotes, news articles, television appearances, session logs and a lot more.
This book is a cross between Brad Elliot's "Surf's Up! The Beach Boys on Record" for its accuracy in record releases and chart positions, and Barry Miles "The Beatles Diary" for its layout in terms of the day-to-day activities of the group with notable dates outlined.
I would recommend this book to all those who would like to know what Brian, Dennis, Carl, Mike, Al and Bruce were doing in certain time periods with regards to performing and recording rather than those who would like to read the book in a non-fictional way.
A fantastic book and a great achievement to Keith Badman!
