Product Description

Product Description

Between 1961 and 1969 the Beach Boys made nineteen albums, including some of the best music ever recorded – and some not so good.
In this book, Andrew Hickey looks at this music track by track, analysing every song that Brian, Carl, Dennis, Mike, Al, Bruce and David recorded and released during that time period.
From early surf and car classics like 409 to sophisticated masterpieces like Time To Get Alone, in this book you’ll learn how they were recorded, why they work the way they do, and which albums to buy if you want to hear a great band at their best.

Anyone, who like this author, cites Smiley Smile (and Love You) as amongst their favourite all time Beach Boys records just has to be taken note of. In similar fashion to this writer, although I'm a little older than him, I've loved the music of the Beach Boys throughout my life and I can easily relate to each CD as it is expertly broken down song by song. This book deals with more than the hits. That is, those that everyone is familiar with and cleverly explains how Brian Wilson would use some of his musical ideas in his songs on more than one occasion. It's a great little read but you really have to be a huge fan or else it might come across as over the top to a casual (or newcomer) fan of Beach Boys music. I'm already looking forward to volumes 2 and 3.

A must have for any Beach Boys enthusiast! 18 May 2012
By Amy Kaptsenel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I've read this through probably a half-dozen times already and find the information within to be endlessly fascinating. I have yet to find another book that goes into the level of detail about each individual track that Andrew Hickey provides in this tome and reading along with the music enhances the experience exponentially. It's on my shortlist of recommended reading for any Beach Boys enthusiast!!

In-depth Analysis of the music of the Beach Boys 14 Mar 2012
By Johnny Von Roadblock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As an amateur musician and composer, I enjoyed this book for its analysis of the music. Many books on the Beach Boys (and other groups) focus on the personal lives and history of the group at the expense of the music itself. If you want the perspective of musical analysis, then you must read this book! I found the author's explanation of the sources and influences of Brian Wilson's compositions well researched. After reading Andrew's book, I listened again to the Beach Boys to hear these influences as well as the new innovations that Brian Wilson brought to popular music. I even hear a little bit of "Louie Louie" sprinkled here and there! It was like hearing them for the first time! It also made me realize that the BB's real strength was in their vocal arrangements more so than the instruments, something that is overlooked by other analysis of the BB's and it is what made them so unique at the time. I sang in barbershop quartets in high school and really hear this in their music.
Great book!

A Must Read ! 6 May 2011
By Dr. Ron Grassi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Another MUST READ for any serious & scientific fan of The Boy's & Brian. Great overview for the casual and newbie fans as well. I grew up through all of this music " in real time ". This publication supplemented my education and appreciation of Brian, The Boy's and their music. Will now listen just a little bit differently with an added dimension. Thank you so much for this contribution to musical appreciation and historical archives. Love that "Pet Soundish" cover art. Look forward to Vol 2 ! Dr Ron Grassi. Chiropractic Physician.
