Product Description

This text is an attempt to recreate the circumstances of the summer of 1940, looking at questions the conflict raised, such as: how close did Britain really come to invasion?; what were Hitler and Churchill's intentions?; and what was the real effect of the battle on World War II's outcome?

I have read quite a few books about the Battle of Britain and this one seems to me to be a very balanced summary. It does not delve much into the personal experiences of the combatants but sticks to giving the reader an overview. A good way to get a quick idea of what actually happened and I suspect, a taste for more detail from the pilots themselves.

At last a book that does 'explode' myths about the Battle of Britain - but doesn't destroy the central truth that the battle was one of the most decisive periods in world history. It may be small but every page is packed with all the information you nedd to understand this highly complex subject. This book will go down in the historiography of the Battle of Britain, along with Len Deightons 'Fighter', of two books that just have to be read.

Overy has written a smashing summary of the Battle of Britain and its historical significance. If you are new to this subject or pressed for time then this a fine - if very brief - introduction.
