4.0 out of 5 stars a compact and quirky work of brilliance 16 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Like all of JL Carr's work this is a compact and quirky little novel that makes you mourn for all those trees that are pulped for the house-brick sized novels that go from bookshop to charity shop via airline excess baggage charges. This little gem you will not part with. Based in Carr's own experience it's the story of an ill prepared English teacher who ventures to work in the American midwest and becomes embroiled in a 'little local difficulty' - if that's a good description of the illegal discharge of a old civil war cannon at the forces of law and order. A good gentle story, beautifully and minimally crafted. After this you will want to read his other books. I only give it 4 stars bacause I reserve the 5th for his best:'A Month in the Country'.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Wild West 7 Sep 2011
By ABC
Format:Paperback
I wouldn't rave about this book and only read it because I enjoyed 'A Month in the Country'. Nevertheless it is an interesting story about an idealistic young man who, in 1929, leaves Bradford for Palisades to take up a teaching post in South Dakota. In this tiny outback settlement there are plenty of challenges for George Gidner as he battles with his wayward pupils and the locals whose mindset is still in the Wild West.

The story is told in J. L. Carr's quirky style and, back in Bradford, is related by George as an old man when he remembers, with horror, the build up to and the aftermath of the shoot-out that was the battle of Pollocks Crossing
