I cannot rate it too highly. It starts with why and how HMS Hood was built, her launching and her peace-time career. The the book moves on, after a notional tour of the ship with accompanying deck plans, to describe in great and fascinating detail the workings of the ship, and the life of the men aboard, in all the various departments, and using plenty of quotes from men at all levels. Finally it describes war time service, the disaster, and the aftermath. Although by necessity most of the many photos are black and white, there is a section of colour photos, and of course the marvellous 3D illustrations of the exterior and key interior areas. Along with the expected bibliography, there is a list of all the men lost in the sinking - I frequently referred to it as I read the book, hoping that a particular writer had survived; some did, others sadly not.
This book sets a benchmark for books on any ship, as it successfully gives technical and social information in a very skilful and interesting way.
