If you have an interest in the Battle of Britain and the true events of the aerial war over England in 1940,The Battle of Britain - Then and Now, is the text book. Text book, as this work sets aside the stories and folklore and tells it how it was - backed with the most detailed and indepth research available upon the subject of the Battle Of Britain. At times, when uncovering the details of immense bravery or reflecting upon the details of loss of life the authors have quite correctly presented the whole story leaving the reader heartened by the stories of such bravery but sad at the extent of the loss of life.
The book details every single Battle of Britain pilot, squadron, aircraft and airfield - and particularly in the latter case, Then and Now. Unfortunately, 'Now'was in 1980 and thus the overgrown airfields pictured then have become over-built, in many cases but not all making any enthusiast keen to visit and see first hand what remains of those 1940's battlefields
The book pays tribute to all the pilots espiecally those that failed to return. The pictures of the gravestones may therefore appear to be a little ghoulish but what greater a tribute can be made then to remember what those young pilots did and then remember where they now lie - in many cases thanks to the authors overgrown graves were rediscovered and mistakes of identity or rank ratified.
Is the book worth the large expense? For any enthusiast who really wishes to have the facts and the stories that went with them this is a must have book. Why only 4 stars? At times the book is lacking in layout method which makes for a stilted flow which is not helped by the update sections of the book which updates the reader from when the book was first published to its latest print in 2000.

This edition is described as "Mk V", which nicely maintains the aviation theme!

Quite frankly, if you have this book then you probably don't really need any others for information on the BofB - this huge tome is THE definitive work on the subject, with photographs, airfield maps, details of crash sites, list of combatant pilots, etc, etc, etc. Other books may fine-tune/update some of the detail in the light of later research, or personalise some of the events, but this book is far and away the best overall reference work as a 'one stop shop'. Excellent.

Probably one of the best publications of it's type I have ever read, on a subject which has had so much written about it over the years.

Painstakingly researched, presented in a form which makes it a classic work of reference, and in many instances fills in gaps in other publications.

The detail contained within this book is impressive, and I am so pleased I purchased it, the content has opened up fresh interest in the Battle of Britain, and will keep me immersed for a long time.

Heartily recommended to anyone who wants a book they can dip into time & time again.

Honestly I can't rate this book highly enough... it is perfect for my needs. I wanted a book full of facts and figures and this is it and more. A short review but seriously I can't say any more than excellent.

although I did not buy this book from Amazon having been the owner of an earlier volumn which was given to me as a present by my wife during the 1980s and was purchased from the Aerospace Museum at RAF Cosford, near Wolverhampton for the then quite expensive price of £25 .00 .I can strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the true story on the B of B.As has already been stated by another reviewer if you have this volumn you do not need any other unless you want to read personnel accounts from individual pilots and aircrew on both sides of their own experience. This book covers every aspect of that crucial and very important conflict which gave Great Britain the edge over Germany and must have seriously dented their confidence in their own invincibility.

A good source of information on the Battle of Britain and certainly not a "read". A worthwhile addition to any BoB library.

Having lost my original, first edition copy of this book after lending it out and not getting it back, I've been wanting to replace it for some time. I was thrilled to find the up-dated, 'Mk V' edition, in virtually new, unused condition, at such a great price.
Very pleased indeed !
