Incredibly useful and detailed with introductions to all the pieces plus puzzles to solve --Families South East

Product Description

Chess is experiencing a new wave of popularity in schools, and it's educational too. Organisations like Chess in Schools are promoting it as the perfect way to develop analytical thinking skills, foster the competitive instinct – and provide a lot of fun along the way.

This cute, character-based book, aimed at children aged 7 and up, is a complete guide to chess for those starting out in the game. In straightforward, animated language, Jess and Jamie – two rough-and-tumble kids who are obsessed with chess – explain everything you need to know, from first sitting down at the board to sneaky tricks to help you beat your opponents.

The book explains who the pieces are and how they move (and that we're talking about pawns, not prawns), how to reach checkmate (or, in Jess's words, 'how to kill the king'), and the concept of the opening, middlegame and endgame. It also introduces the idea of chess etiquette - and explains why: sometimes no one wins and a game ends in stalemate.

Friendlier and more fun than the average children's chess book, The Batsford Book of Chess for Children should become an essential addition to any child's bookshelf.

Author Information:
Sabrina Chevannes is a young chess player and tutor – a real rising star in the world of British chess. Managing Director of the Chevannes Chess Academy, she teaches chess in many London schools, including Dulwich College, and arranges chess tournaments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mmmmmmm I love it! 13 Oct 2013
Format:Hardcover
Having become accustomed to the delights of Ms Chevannes through her DVD material, I thought I would check to see if her written work lived up to the standard promised by the DVD.

Having previously lost our chess coach (RIP the late Jim Fisher, sadly deceased) I was looking for something that my younger daughter could use to help her grasp her way onto the 64 square battlefield.

I am pleased to say this book does not disappoint. Every rule covered, as well as the more confusing ones, and every basic mating position is covered to ensure whoever reads this will surely come first, in any competition they enter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Chess book 11 Aug 2014

Great Chess book.. On a personal level, really proud of Sabrina for this achievement. Even though we don't know each other closely, I once met her at an international event some 5 years ago and she seemed a promising chess figure when we had a chat, so i'm not surprised she has birthed this brilliant book. The moment I saw that she's the author, I purchased it right away as I am involved in coaching youngsters in Chess. It exposes Chess to kids in a way that's fun, exciting and engaging. Its colourful pages and pictorial style adds up to the overall brilliance of the book. So far, this is a very worthy book for anyone looking to get their kids interested in Chess

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book, great illustrations 25 Mar 2014
Format:Hardcover
My son (6) received this as a Christmas present. He already enjoyed playing chess and this has helped him think more about his moves and has taught him (and me) new tactics. Over and above this though he simply loves the book for the dialogue between the characters, the great illustrations and the writer's sense of humour. I am now buying it for my nephew who asked for it as a birthday present after seeing our copy.
