BOB DYLAN Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to ... Read more in Amazon's Bob Dylan Store

Product Description

Compiled from meticulously restored original tapes--many found only recently--this historic six-disc set is the definitive chronicle of the artist's legendary 1967 recording sessions with members of his touring ensemble who would later achieve their own fame as The Band.

The Basement Tapes Complete brings together, for the first time ever, every salvageable recording from the tapes including recently discovered early gems recorded in the "Red Room" of Dylan's home in upstate New York.

Garth Hudson worked closely with Canadian music archivist and producer Jan Haust to restore the deteriorating tapes to pristine sound, with much of this music preserved digitally for the first time. The decision was made to present The Basement Tapes Complete as intact as possible.

Also, unlike the official 1975 release, these performances are presented as close as possible to the way they were originally recorded and sounded back in the summer of 1967. The tracks on The Basement Tapes Complete run in mostly chronological order based on Garth Hudson's numbering system.

Ever since the days of the Great White Wonder (arguably the first ever bootleg album), recordings from these sessions have `circulated privately', as the euphemism would have it. And even after Robbie Robertson's eccentric, narcissistic attempt at compiling an official release (1975's wonderful but horribly flawed `Basement Tapes' double album), there's always been the sense that more - and better - material from these legendary sessions has been left lying in the vaults. And so it has turned out. Even the 1975 set surprised the world with `Goin' To Acapulco', which until then had flown under the bootleggers' radar; likewise Columbia's first official `Bootleg Series' set in 1991 included the hitherto-unknown and utterly joyous `Santa Fe'. Other gems have trickled out since then, notably the extraordinary `I'm Not There (1956)' from the eponymously-titled Todd Haynes movie soundtrack. Hardcore Bob-spotters will probably be familiar several dozen further tracks, which have `circulated privately' on excellent sets like the 4-CD `A Tree With Roots' for some 20 years or more. But now Columbia have pretty much kicked the ball out of the park with a more-or-less definitive 138-track monster, including some two discs' worth of material that has never previously enjoyed any significant circulation at all.

The 1975 set will do nothing to prepare the new listener for the sheer breadth of the Basement sessions. Any Bob-lover coming for the first time to these wonderful recordings should prepare to have their mind well and truly blown by some of the very finest moments in Dylan's studio career. To start with, the range and quality of folk covers here is extraordinary: an aspect of `the Basements' that the 1975 set hardly even glancingly touches upon.

As a person who has listened to and bought as near 100 per cent of any officially released Bob Dylan material to go on sale in the UK as possible as well as numerous unofficial CDs records tapes and DVDs I wish to make clear that I am not especially objective when it comes to reviewing this release. I am giving it Five Stars because what is good about it is wonderful though this is not necessarily from a listening viewpoint. It is historically wonderful and the package as a whole is a lovely item which matches well with the last two volumes in this series. The first five CDs are very good despite some appropriate repetition but the last CD which is listed as a "Bonus" is of a sound quality that is way below what it is reasonable to expect on a commercial release. If I had bought it as a stand alone album I would be very annoyed. The excellent liner notes by Sid Griffin and Clinton Heylin along with the book of photographs enhance the music.
Despite that and I did not expect to find myself saying this but I am also of the opinion that Sony have overpriced this set. They know there are plenty of people out there of my vintage who would pay this sum and in a way they are not alone as other artists have also sold very expensive packages of old remastered music. That does not make it right. Even now I look forward to the next volume in the series but hope they may take this view which I see repeated elsewhere into account. The Basement Tapes complete is most certainly not for beginners but I, for one, am delighted it is here now.

I am very pleased with the decisions and care that Sony has made in putting together this Basement Tapes Complete collection. Too often record companies aim these releases to the lowest common denominator and not the avid fan or completist. Admittedly Dylan has more completist fans than most artists.

First off the packaging. The box measures 8 1/2" x 8 1/4" x 1 1/2" and acts as a slipcase for 2 books. The first contains the 6 cd's, along with 3 essays. The most interesting essay to me was 9 pages by Clinton Heylin detailing the stories of tracking down the various reels and recordings that make up this set. Since he was allowed to play in the big boys' clubhouse Heylin is on his best behavior, not that there would be much to complain about here. His piece is thorough and entertaining. The other book contains photographs by Elliott Landy, the definitive photographer of Dylan and The Band in this era, along with various pictures of tape reels, 45 RPM sleeves, magazine covers and the like. This book is a beautiful companion to this set.

As for the music (all 6 hours and 35 minutes) - we are told that this represents absolutely all existing, listenable songs from these sessions. I was skeptical of that at first. How would we know if they were telling the truth? Suppose there were some fragments or lesser quality recordings that they held back just because the quality was low and they didn't want to release more than 6 discs? Well, I believe them now because a few of these songs are pretty bad in recording quality. Which they cop to when they list disc 6 as a bonus disc "of historic importance but very poor sonic quality".
