Book Description

15 Jun 2011
For more than twenty years, Barefoot Contessa, the acclaimed specialty food store, has been cooking and baking extraordinary dishes for enthusiastic customers in the Hamptons. For many of those years, people have tried to get the exuberant owner, Ina Garten, to share the secrets of her store. Finally, the energy and style that make Barefoot Contessa such a special place are shown here, with dozens of recipes and more than 160 breathtaking photographs, in The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook.

Ina's most popular recipes use familiar ingredients, but they taste even better than you would expect. Her Pan-Fried Onion Dip is the real thing, with slowly car-amelized onions and fresh sour cream. Tomato soup is created from oven-roasted tomatoes and fresh basil to intensify the flavors. Meat loaf is as good as your grandmother's, but it's healthier because it's made with ground turkey and fresh herbs. The light and flaky Maple-Oatmeal Scones are baked with rolled oats, whole wheat, and real maple syrup. Now these and other famous Barefoot Contessa recipes can be prepared at home.

Ina says that before she owned a specialty food store she often spent a week making dinner for six friends. Her experience at Barefoot Contessa has given her hundreds of ideas for creating wonderful parties in a few hours. And they're all in this book. Crab Cakes with Rémoulade Sauce can be stored overnight in the refrigerator and sautéed just before the guests arrive. Cheddar Corn Chowder can be made days ahead, reheated, and served with a salad and bread for a delicious autumn lunch. The ingredients for Grilled Salmon Salad can all be prepared ahead and tossed together before serving. The batter for the Raspberry Corn Muffins can be mixed a day before and popped into the oven just before breakfast.

Ina Garten teaches us how to entertain with style, simplicity, and a relaxed sense of fun. There are notes throughout the book for giving cocktail parties, lunches, and dinner parties where everything is done before the guests arrive. And there are easy instructions for creating gorgeous party platters that don't even require you to cook!

With Ina Garten and The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, you have the perfect recipe for hosting parties that are easy and fun for everyone--including the cook.

Product Description

Review

I enjoy Barefoot Contessa both for its presentation, which is just about the best I've ever seen, and also because the food tastes like home cooking - because it is. I'm drawn in as much by its personality as I am by what they have to offer (Steven Spielberg, Director )

Like Ina Garten herself, this stunning, lively new book is about style, simplicity, comfort, and good times among family and friends. Her natural approach to food is frank and forward, and you are sure to treasure each tip, each recipe (Patricia Wells, Author Of At Home With Patricia Wells: Cooking In Provence )

No store more fully embodies the easy, stylish elegance of the Hamptons than Barefoot Contessa. And no one understands what successful entertaining is all about better than Ina Garten. Born of retailing, her wonderful, accessible recipes have been tested on you and me for a very long time and they really work. Bravo! (Eli Zabar, Owner Of Eat, The Vinegar Factory )

Beloved all over the planet (not only for her food), Ina Garten has become the inspiration in the kitchen for so many of us. Her ease, warmth and grace make her shows as delectable to watch as her food is to eat. (Gwyneth Paltrow ) --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to prepare, hard to resist 16 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
After making just three recipes from The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook -- the Outrageous Brownies, the Fresh Corn Salad, and the Parmesan Smashed Potatoes -- I know I can trust the recipes in this delightfully designed, gloriously photographed paean to good cooking. Co-workers and friends could not stop enthusing about the brownies, which many claimed were the best brownies they'd ever tasted, and dinner guests went back for three helpings of the potatoes. As some have pointed out, this is NOT low-fat cuisine -- but neither is a Big Mac and an order of fries, which would leave one infinitely less satisfied than the dishes here. So, when taste is your primary concern, trust this invaluable resource from Ina Garten -- I know I will for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars enticing entertaining and simple 8 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook was entertaining to read cover to cover. It was easy to read in an hour, and I often caught myself mentally planning to use several recipes and ideas. The side notes are very helpful in making the recipes successful and simple. Most recipes were ones that I would use for special family events and for entertaining. The best cookbook that I've read that includes detailed descriptions in parenthesis with the ingredients listed in the recipe. I enjoyed the forward by Martha Stewart and the intro from Ina Garten. The photos were vivid and personable. The sources are listed for specialty foods also. If you like to cook simple specialty dishes for family or friends, this is a cookbook to read and use. Ina Garten's book is not just your ordinary cookbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars "one of THE best!" 4 July 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
The joy I have experienced in reading The Barefoot Contessa's cookbook is truly fantastic. I love the way it is formatted, the photographs, which I consider a necessity and the variety of recipes. One of the first things I tried, was the coconut cupcakes and the salmon salad.....both hard to beat and I highly recommend them.!!!! Add this book to your collection...its truly not to be missed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok 12 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I love the layout of this book but I have made three recipes out of this book already and had problems with two. The pan-fried onion dip was delicious but extremely heavy. The coconut cupcakes were good but cut the frosting recipe in half and the sun dried tomato dip does not need the extra salt. I also feel the this book was too expensive for the amount of recipes you get. Visually stunning, but wait until it goes on sale to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN INDISPENSABLE KITCHEN REFERENCE 10 Nov 2006
By Gail Cooke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
For those who haven't had the pleasure of shopping at Ina Garten's specialty food store in the Hamptons The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook delivers - literally. Some 160 gorgeous photos plus Ina's favorite recipes fill the 252 pages of this indispensable kitchen reference.

As Martha Stewart writes in her Foreword, Ina is unique. "There is a freshness in cooking, a total lack of finickiness, a reliance on the freshest and best, and a casualness that I know will be appealing to everyone who uses her book." How true!

Ina stresses freshness, noting that after several weeks in Provence where she found radishes and carrots with "soil still clinging to them," she determined to base her cooking on ingredients from local sources. A lesson for us all.

Hosting a cocktail party, she decided, was not much fun if she spent all of her time running back and forth to the kitchen to get hot hors d'oeuvres out of the oven. So, she does everything possible to be sure that she does not leave the room. For instance, she has a table with all the drink fixings on it, and appetizers that can be served at room temperature so everything is either out or ready to pass when the first guest arrives. Thus we find common sense and uncommonly good appetizers from Roasted Eggplant spread to Guacamole to Smoked Salmon Sandwiches.

Her soups are splendid, most of them starting with sauteed onions "to give a sweet, rich flavor to the stock." Parker's Split Pea Soup, which Steven Spielberg said tasted just like his mother's, is rich, hearty and beautifully presented topped either with toasted croutons or diced smoked ham.

The joy Ina finds in cooking is evident in all of her dishes. She's a cook who makes simple food very, very special.

Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 17 Feb 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like cookery books and when I saw the Barefoot Countessa on TV she seemed to be cooking things that I would like to try and so I bought her book. The introduction refers to the '160 breathtaking photos' and that about sums it up. Yes the photos are good but I never bought it for that. The recipes are disappointing and include how to make a cup of coffee and a cup of chocolate, I was particularly unimpressed with the sugar snap peas and sesame seeds and roast carrots. There are a few good dinner party recipes but overall it was a waste of money. I didn't like the name dropping 'Steven Spielberg said the soup tasted like his mother's - so what?? The book belongs on the coffee table not in the kitchen, I will stick to Mary Berry and Hairy Bikers etc thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellant and interesting cookbook. 8 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
The visual presentation is wonderful. I tried the sun-dried tomato dip(using low-fat whipped cream cheese), and the hummus as a dip. It's 3 days after the party and I am still getting thank you's from people who attended the party. So - Thank you Ina. Can't wait to out the rest of the book.
