Why am I giving this VHS tape five stars? Obviously to help along the imminent advent of The Banana Splits Show on DVD. This is one of the few live-action (non-cartoon) shows Hanna-Barbera did while Chris Brough, producer of ReBoot was in charge of the live action division. Another memorable show was Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp.
Live action shows by Sid and Marty Krofft such as H.R. Puf'n'Stuf, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Lidsville and others in the Krofft Supershow format were quite popular, as well as The Great Space Coaster (with Gary Gnu and the gnews). But this Hanna-Barbera Sat-Am entry is an all-time classic.
Four costumed animals drove around in Banana Buggies and ran around in nonsensical, fun antics reminiscent of the Beatles in Help or Rowan and Martin's Laugh In. But they also showed a number of cartoons, and thus brought back and re-invented the original TV cartoon format of 'toons shown by a live host.
As the unforgettable theme song introduced them: "flippin' like a pancake, poppin' like a cork; Bingo, Drooper, Fleegle and Snork".
