I have distinctive memory of this film from my chilhood. Set in Paris of the late 1950's a young boy befriends a stray red balloon and in return is befriended by the balloon. This short film captures the magic and awe of childhood, where an object as a simple balloon can become a faithful companion. Without any spoken dialouge there unfolds a story line where an understanding between the ballon and the boy evoles. The stray ballon having been found by the young boy, decides in turn to follow the boy on the bus the school, it waits for him to finish school and follows him back to his home. The ignorance of adulthood and the cruelty of envious children are also captured within this film. I am always amazed that this film isnt more widely known and grateful for the fact that it hasnt been remade into some kind of syrupy goo vechile for a budding hollywood child star. If you like Wings of Desire, if you like Its a Wonderful Life then this film is for you. It sentimental and it's cute and above it a brilliant account of what its like to be a child in awe of the world.

The Red Balloon 4 Feb 2009
Format:DVD
This DVD was bought as a Christmas present for my husband. He had mentioned that he had watched it many years before and had so enjoyed it then. It took a while to locate a copy but found one at Amazon. It was 'the wrong area DVD' which is clearly displayed at the time of purchase but we managed to play it quite successfully on our laptop computer and just like the first time he thoroughly enjoyed it. There is little speaking and there are subtitles but the story is easy to follow as is literally a visual experience. We happen to be fans of French films which have a poignancy we find interesting and different from other films.

Silence is Golden 2 Nov 2003
Format:VHS Tape
This is a beautiful, poignant film. I remember seeing once or twice in my childhood, shown on daytime television. It does have a melancholy feel, but I feel it is an excellent way of introducing children to World Cinema.
