Book Description

30 Sep 2011
When entrepreneurial Floyd Stitt opens a bakery in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1908, his timing is perfect. Barely emancipated women eagerly buy his delicious bread, cakes and pies and Stitt's Bakery flourishes. Growing up surrounded by flour and sugar, Stitt's three attractive daughters have the bakery in their blood. Artistic Dot, enigmatic Louise and problem-solving Elaine come of age in the Depression and see the men they love to war while they continue baking and selling bread on the home front. With meticulous attention to historical detail, The Bakery Girls chronicles three memorable decades from the perspective of three remarkable sisters who understand the big difference a little sugar can make in good times and bad. Reminiscent of "Chocolat," by JoAnn Harris

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical fiction: a tale of three Pennsylvania sisters 28 Nov 2011
By Corinne H. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Dorothea "Dot" (b. 1911), Louise (b. 1916), and Elaine (b. 1926) grow up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, as the daughters of baker Floyd Stitt and his wife, Clara. This story follows the girls from their childhoods to young womanhoods, and through the Great Depression and the World War II years. We learn of their hopes and dreams and their favorite songs and movies. We meet the men they care about who go off to war. Along the way, we also learn the ins and outs of the bakery business, including the vagaries of commercially-sliced bread and the restorative properties of homemade cherry pie. Each sister has a different relationship with the family bakery. Sometimes it's a welcomed one; sometimes, not. But no matter where Life takes her, each girl discovers that Stitt flour and sugar are in her blood.

Although this book is a work of historical fiction, it is based on the very real lives of Ms. Ditlow's ancestors. "The Bakery Girls" is recommended reading for women of all ages, but especially for those who are familiar with the central Pennsylvania landscape, for those who like to bake, and for those who are fascinated by the culture of The Greatest Generation. Read it as though it's all true, because most of it is. The experiences of these girls will stay with you for a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brought Back Memories 6 April 2012
By Deborah Taussigboehner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I spent many summers visiting my grandparents who lived across the street from Stitt's Bakery. As neighbors, we were able to visit at night and purchase sticky buns still warm from the oven. I also fondly remember spending many afternoons watching beautiful cakes being frosted and decorated. I remember the patience of the decorator as she explained the many steps in creating such beautiful creations, and for allowing me, as a kid not more than 12 years old to just hang out and take it all in....the aroma was amazing whether it was night or day. As I read the book, the names came flooding back to me, and I remember my grandparents, Frank and Frieda Mumper, talking about Dot, Christy, Louise etc. Little did I know of their backgrounds or passions, and this book has added dimension to my memories. I was perhaps 12 years old when the bakery closed, but I will never forget the place that it held in my life. Thank-you Ms. Ditlow for a most enjoyable afternoon of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing History to LIFE 6 Nov 2011
By S. Walker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This delightful book is a wonderful account of what it was like to be a real person in Central Pa. during the first half of the 20th century. I think it is an excellent book for teaching LIVING HISTORY. The combination of historical fact and Ditlow's personal knowledge of the leading ladies makes for an entertaining as well as educational read. Ditlow's description of baking bread was so enticing that I found myself devouring a piece of toast I yearned for.
