Product Description

Review

'Formidable talent . . . not so much Reservoir Dogs, more agony aunt with the mind of Morse.'

(Sunday Express (The Bad Quarto) 19980101)

'This is a satisfyingly convoluted tale, involving a family tragedy that took place many years before, as well as some ingenious sleuthing on the part of Imogen. In addition to this series, Paton Walsh has written two novels that continue Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey series and there is the same scholarly sensibility and elegant way with a plot twist to be found in the living author's work as there is in that of the doyenne of detective fiction.'

(Christina Koning, The Times 19980101)

'Jill Paton Walsh has created a Miss Marple for the 21st century.'

(Mirror )

'An entertaining read' (Sunday Times )

'A jewel in the traditional English detective mode... Ms. Morse has arrived' (Observer )

'Imogen Quy positively sparkles on the page as an amateur sleuth.' (Sunday Express )

'In Imogen Quy, the author has created an admirable detective heroine, as unabashed as she is unaffected.' (Times Literary Supplement )

'Paton Walsh plots deftly and writes intelligently . . . Sayers' many fans will be delighted.' (Andrew Taylor, Independent )

'Jill Paton Walsh demonstrates that the traditional ingredients of the woman sleuth, the academic background and a clever puzzle are still capable of being arranged into an entertaining and stimulating crime novel.' (Manchester Evening News )

Mirror

'Jill Paton Walsh has created a Miss Marple for the 21st century.'

The Bad Quarto is a detective story set in Cambridge involving wonderfully arcane Cambridge customs, mad university politics and a Shakespeare play. I finished it in one go and will certainly read it again some day.
Where the previous book, Debts of Dishonour, was a huge disappointment this is quality stuff. A great one for anglophiles, lovers of Shakespeare and the old-fashioned detective story where you can still gather information by buying the local bum a cup of tea even if he is on drugs now.
The only thing I didn't like was the hasty ending. I rather enjoyed the characters and could have done with a bit more wrap up time.

good story but... 22 Mar 2012

A good story but too many coincidences. With all these books I find it hard to believe that a college nurse would be treated as an equal by the Master and the dons! That said it is nice to read a book of this genre with some intelligent dialogue. I too thought the ending was a bit rushed and not very well done. Did not read book 3 as not on Kindle for some reason. Reasonable plot but found a HUGE clue to ending 3/4 way through., maybe I read too many detective books!
