Book Description

20 Jan 2013
In the far future, humanity settles the stars, bioengineering its descendants to survive in a harsh universe. This is the first book in the science fiction series, The Backworlds. Try it for free. A space opera adventure. After the war with the Foreworlders, Backworlders scatter across the remaining planets. Competition is fierce, and pickings are scant. Scant enough that Craze’s father decides to improve his fortunes by destroying his son. He tells his only boy their moon isn’t big enough for them both and gives Craze a ticket for the next transport leaving the space dock. Treated worse than a stranger, like the scuzzbag of the galaxy, Craze is forced to flee his home. Cut off from everyone he knows with little money and no knowledge of the worlds beyond his, he must find away to forge a new life and make sure his father regrets this day.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very good 27 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is a simplistic adventure tale with paper thin, childish characters and a largely uninteresting story.

What struck me most was the complete absence of character building that reduces the book to an account of people meeting and doing things for no obvious reasons. For instance, near the beginning of the book the main character meets two other characters and apparently becomes life-long friends with them in what amounts to about 5 minutes of conversation. This is continued throughout the book, and while the main character has an element of depth to him no other character is given any time to develop any sort of depth of their own - a fact the author must have recognised since she gives each of them catchphrases to differentiate them.

Not worth your time reading. Get a good science fiction book such as Great North Road instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars For reference 5 July 2013

To all authors and anime script writers: sulky, adolescent protagonists who feel hard done by and cheated thinking they can make a fortune and show those they feel wronged them make poor subjects for novels. Craze is the worst sort of main character. This book is worse than poor, it is unimaginative, stock characters overcrowded it. It has been a long time since I read a novel which so makes me want to avoid a series of books. Do not waste your time.

The characters go round in circles. This could become a cult classic. Or not. I didn't finish it so can't comment any more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Odd 23 Jan 2014
By Huge
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Now I usually love science fiction and have often enjoyed even some of the more difficult to understand ones but this takes the biscuit as possibly one of the strangest. There was no real story unless you count `chocolate' robbery as being worth reading about. No characters worth latching onto, strange made-up words and a story with no hope of ever coming good I'd say. Sorry but this was not at all enjoyable or interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Otherworldly sci fi 2 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The narrative is beautifully vivid with unusual and varied sentence structures giving an alien feel. The author needs to resist telling rather than showing but this was the only real flaw I could find in an otherwise brilliant story. Sci-fi fans will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - A MUST READ 15 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Brilliant sci fi novel, full of realistic adventures, humorous and very easy to read. Not being a sci fi novel reader I found this novel quite stimulating.
