Book Description

A fresh start in a place you hate. Even tougher with a killer watching...

Jane Osborne left Cambridge and vowed she'd never return. An unexpected twist of fortune results in DC Goodhew bringing her back to the remnants of her old life and a confrontation with the man who killed her sister.

Meanwhile a burning car on the outskirts of Cambridge leads to the discovery of the body of its owner, Paul Marshall. There seems nothing to connect it to either a recent assault, or to Jane Osborne, until a shocking discovery rips Goodhew's investigation apart.

    More About the Author

Alison describes becoming an author and the birth of the Goodhew series :

'Over the years I've worked in all kinds of jobs, from admin to electro-plating and from DJ-ing to IT management. I didn't always plan to become a full time novelist but I can't remember a time in my adult life when I wasn't carrying a notebook and pen and jotting down my latest ideas.

When I'm writing I work on a story idea until I can visualise it clearly and replay it in my head until it feels more like a watching a movie than something I've created.

I've made up stories this way since childhood, in fact it was such a great way to combat boredom that it is still my favourite way to kill time in a queue!

Eventually my love for thrillers and murder mysteries dovetailed with my early plotlines and I realised that I was rarely coming up with a story premise that didn't involve crime and usually a body or two.

One day I hit on an idea that grabbed me so strongly that I decided to tackle a full length novel. It was whilst working on this first book that I realised I needed a police character and DC Gary Goodhew was born. Initially his role was relatively minor but from the very start I knew I wanted to him to be the kind of detective that I'd been wishing I could find in other people's books.

Goodhew had wanted to join the police since just before his 12th birthday and has achieved the rank of DC at the young age of twenty-five. This kind of quiet determination is typical of Goodhew and it is this, alongside his ability to empathise with people, which produces results.
As my interest in him grew so did his role in the story. By the time I reached the end of the book he was the one character that I couldn't bear to leave behind.

I moved to the Cambridge area in 1998 and decided to make it the backdrop for the books because of its unique mix of characteristics. It is a relatively small city but has a worldwide reputation for education and science. On its doorstep lie tiny and relatively primitive rural hamlets yet it has an airport and fast rail links into London. It is traditionally English but multi-ethnic, vastly wealthy in places but under privileged in others. Goodhew grew up here and the city is one of his great loves, researching through his eyes gave me a wonderful insight into the landmarks the tourists never visit.'

Alison Bruce has also written two non-fiction books, Cambridgeshire Murders and The Billington, Victorian Executioner, both published by the History Press.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb. Alison Bruce's best book to date 18 Nov. 2013
    Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Having read all the previous DC Goodhew books I was looking forward to The Backs...and I wasn't disappointed. Nobody solves mysteries like our Goodnew. Love the gruesome murder right off the bat - I'm already having nightmares over the 'wire'. I love the way Bruce keeps her seemingly unconnected murders in their separate compartments until Gary starts writing on his wall and then Wow everyone is involved. My wife and I fought over whose turn it was to read the book - next time I'll have to buy two copies.

I don't want to put any spoilers in this review so it will have to be short, but if you don't shout out NO at least twice in this book I will be amazed. Alison has written an amazing story that had my head spinning. There are some situations that make you feel uncomfortable, some characters who make you ooze hate and an ending..... For all the Gary Goodhew fans it delivers and then some. For anyone who just fancies reading this book and doesn't want to read the other four it is written in such a way that you will still have a wonderful journey through some dark minds and will probably then read the other four books anyway. Hope there will be a DC Goodhew 6 and eventually karma will even things out.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous 6 Oct. 2013
    Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
'The Backs' is the latest DC Goodhew novel in the Cambridge based series. As usual, Alison Bruce does not disappoint. Her characters are well drawn and drive the story effortlessly. The narrative is of such quality that it keeps you turning the pages, even into the small hours when you should already be asleep...
Without wishing to spoil the story I can tell you that two supposedly separate crimes are intricately linked, illustrating Alison's clever plotting and sheer brilliance for this genre. If you haven't read this book yet, buy a copy today. It is simply fabulous.

5.0 out of 5 stars I think this is the best Goodhew book yet 12 Oct. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't normally read crime fiction. I had read all my books so had picked up my wife's copy of Cambridge Blue (the first Goodhew book) and loved it. I read Alison's first four books in quick succession and have been eagerly awaiting the fifth. I wasn't dissapointed.
The story is well thought out. I really sympathised with the victims and there's some clever twists.
Once again I find myself waiting for Alison's next book. Hurry up Alison!! ;)

Alison is one of my favourite authors, I have read all her books and loved them, this was no exception. I was a little confused why the police brought Jane back to Cambridge to tell her about her sister but apart from that really enjoyed this book but not my favourite. Still love Gary Goodhew.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as expected 22 May 2014
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The reviews for this book made it a "must read" for me as they enthusiastically recommended it. Therefore I had high expectations of it,as,with the exception of one of its predecessors, I have enjoyed the Goodhew series..What a let-down! None of the characters in this book were remotely appealing, and as I read on, I lost any interest in "Who-dunnit" ,and indeed, whether or not the murderer was brought to justice. On the plus side, I love how Alison Bruce uses real Cambridge streets, places and characters in her books.I was delighted to see her refer to "Fabio" who is known to me. I will continue to read her books and look forward to the next in the series.
