Book Description

The unforgettable, poignant new novel from Sunday Times bestseller Freya North.

Born and brought up in an artists’ commune in Derbyshire, Oriana Taylor had freedom at her fingertips in a home full of extraordinary people. The Bedwell brothers, Malachy and Jed, shared their childhood and adolescence with Oriana. In the rambling old house and tangled grounds, their dreams and desires could run free.

But too much freedom comes at a price. Something happened the summer they were fifteen. And now, having been gone eighteen years, Oriana is back.

This is their story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Her best book yet 22 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've been reading Freya North since Sally and I've devoured every book of hers. This, in my opinion, is the best one yet. I don't know if she counts as chick lit - it's always a debate - there are basically four female writers - JoJo Moyes, Marian Keyes, Lisa Jewell and Freya - who guarantee I will buy anything they write. Strong female writers, unforgettable characters and perfect page turners.

This book is beautiful and has at it's heart a wonderful trio of people - Jed, Oriana and Malachy. A little mystery, a little sadness, a lot of regret and a wonderful house. Like many of North's books, familiar faces from previous stories are also within and I had a joyful reunion with Cat McCabe and Django. I read it in 2 days and think I'm going to go back and read it again immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Freya North gem 22 Jun. 2014
By Mrs S-S
As a huge Freya North fan, I was super excited about this release a and I wasn't disappointed, another gem! Freya makes you feel like you're there with her writing, like you know the characters in her books - and the reintroduction of old "friends" in The Way Back Home makes this even more so. Oriana is a girl with a past, with something more scary than most of us will have lived through. Watching her work through this and finally talk about her life is grand, watching her get "past" it is wonderful and watching her start the life she wants is dreamy. 5 stars, 10/10, 100% - well done Freya!

Another wonderfully written book exploring the intricacies of the relationships we form and how these relationships mould us. The characters in this book seem so real but so flawed that it's hard not to love them. The three main protagonists each have their own cross to bear, but in each of them you see things, that if you looked at yourself introspectively for five seconds you'd see the same qualities in yourself. Oriana, Malachy and Jed. At thee start of the book you seem them as three individual beings, standing alone in their own lives. In reality the three of them are so intwined, that eventually it becomes impossible to think of them in the singular. Fans of Freya North's pervious work will be happy to see a reintroduction of some much loved characters from her older novels. If you want a book to get lost in then this is the one for you. I read it in one night, it was impossible to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read 16 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is my first novel by Freya North and it will not be my last. There was something comforting about her style of writing, that feels completely familiar, like I've read this book before. Even in the first chapter when we first meet Oriana and I wasnt sure if I was going to like her, or the story she had to tell, I just knew that I had to keep reading. Which led to me reading almost 3 quarters of the book in just one sitting.

This story isn't told in a straight line. We get glimpses into Oriana's past of who she was then as we watch her find her way in the world today and learn about who she is now. For me, Oriana was a great character, the embodiment of so many of us. With her strong façade yet filled with a deep loneliness. Forever searching for her place to be.

As events begin to unfold, as her story is told I found myself wanting to shield Oriana from her past, yet at the same time, I sat perched on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happened to her. To all of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly lovely story 22 Jun. 2014
By MissCee
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I've read everything by Freya North. This new novel - her 13th - is special. The Way Back Home is such a thoughtful and thought-provoking book. The characters are believable, never cliched, each with their own flaws and I really identified with many of the things that each of them felt. As with all North's books, setting is a key part of the novel - and the wonderful old house called Windward is so vivid I'm sure I could go to Derbyshire and find it. I love the theme of home - of returning home - of never escaping your roots. It was also really compelling seeing these characters in the modern day as well as back when they were 15 - a time in all our lives that's so memorable. This book follows Oriana who grew up in an artists' commune with parents who barely noticed her. But she was looked after by the eccentric souls who lived there - especially the brothers Malachy and Jed who were of a similar age. Then, when they were 15, something happened between them that saw Oriana sent away. It's taken her 18 years to make her way back home. But she's here now - to make sense of her past and carve a meaningful future. Just brilliant. The hardback version is super nice too - great cover and 'feel'. I actually bought a few copies to take as gifts instead of the usual bottle of wine or box of chox!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner 22 Jun. 2014
By Mrs C
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another great story beautifully written by Freya. It took me a little bit longer than normal with her books to really hook into it, hence four rather than five stars. I loved the way previous characters made an appearance - Cat, Ben and Django, allowing you to catch up with their story without overshadowing Oriana's tale. The Way Back Home reminds us that things shouldn't be left unsaid to loved ones, life can all change in a heart beat and the repercussions can last a lifetime.

I enjoyed the description of Winward, the setting for the story, with all the ecclectic characters that lived there. I would love to read about the back story of all the residents, Louis, Lillac, Gordon and how they ended up in the house, as well as the parents of Oriana, Jed and Malachy.

I struggle to write reviews without giving too much of the plot away which will spoil it. Don't let my lack of not having the right words put you off - lovely story, lovely writing, perfect reading - give it a go
