5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and interesting approach to names. 7 Mar 2007
What is great about this book is that it does what no other name book does. It lists the 'style' of the name (for example: Antique Charm, Fanciful, Biblical)and also gives a suggestion of similar 'sibling' names, five for each gender. The author also gives her opinion on the style and feel of the name which are often witty and insightful.

The cons are firstly that it written for an American audience, however a fair amount of attention is paid to British trends as well. Secondly, many people I know who own this book have also experienced the same problem as me with the binding falling apart. However in fairness this could be due to the constant wear it gets from being consulted so often.

If you want a name book that has meanings, this is not the one for you. If on the other hand you want to know the style and useage of a name and see if will be the "next big thing" then this book is fantastic.

WITH another book.
The sibling suggestions are a fun idea, and probably the best thing about this book. LW gives her opinion on the style of the name rather than telling you what they mean! I disagreed with her categorisations a few times. This is a personal gripe, but she lists Annabel as a variant of Annabelle! When any English person would consider it the other way 'round!
She also gives the rank in USA, which is sometimes similar to the UK, but sometimes wildly different too, so don't rely on it.
Worth ording if you are like me and a total name geek though!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational! 25 April 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The Baby Name Wizard is a lot of things, what it isn't, is a book on names and their meanings.

As other reviews have mentioned, the Author concentrates on 'Style Families'.
Inside among the usual Biblical, English and Celtic categories, you'll find lists or Families such as:
The -ens (names ending in EN), 70's & 80's, Little Darlings, Long Gone, Nickname-Proof and New Classics

The book is neatly laid out, Girls and Boys names are both listed alphabetically in their sections and there is a Style Family index at the back.
I particularly like how author Laura Wattenberg has given sibling suggestions. This is helpful, and spookily accurate as well (several names that I like just so happen to be in the same name family).
The book is a US publication but don't let that put you off. You will need to look past the ratings and popularity graphs that the author provides but this is easy to do and you may also come across the odd spelling/variant that may differ.
All in all this is an excellent source book to have and even a shabby well-used copy such as mine is worth it's weight in gold.
Guaranteed to inspire!

Very much American style names. Therefore if you like names like this, probably pretty good. Wish I had known that before I had purchased this.
