Product Description
The First World War airship and aeroplane raids by Germany on Britain constituted the first strategic bombing campaign in history. It was a novel and unwelcome means of waging war that provoked panic and resentment, and dispelled Britain's island sense of security. The raiders, demonised as 'baby killers' for causing indiscriminate civilian casualties, may not have crushed British morale, but they disrupted war production and succeeded in diverting personnel, arms and aeroplanes from where they were needed most at the Front. Most important, the raids changed the face of warfare for ever by bringing the whole nation into the front line. The book features previously unpublished photographs and is divided into a history of the raids as they occurred, and a gazetteer with detailed information about many of the placed that were bombed. Attention is drawn to the physical scars made by the raids that may still be seen today, and to the memorials erected to the victims.
About the Author
Thomas Fegan is a graduate and post-graduate of Kent, London, Cambridge and Surrey Universities. He researches for television documentaries and writes for historical journals. Married and living in Bloomsbury, London.

Everyone has heard of the blitz, air raids inflicted by Hitler on Britain in the second world war. But little is known about the first blitz, when fragile aircraft made their way accross the North Sea to bomb civilians in 1914-18. The babykillers describes and illustrates German air raids on Britain in the first world war. The prose is clear and the content is comprehensive: no sides are taken, and we can empathise with the civilian fear and awe as well as with the anxiety of the 'babykillers'. The wealth of photographs, many of them previously unpublished, as well as the personal accounts, bring the history to life.
The Babykillers is thoroughly researched and comes with a gazeteer which lists, describes and guides you to the many plaques, monuments, scars and graves dotted around Britain. A must for all WW1 history buffs.
