utterly delightful 23 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
I must admit my bias as a fan of Ahlberg's many books for children, but this latest is a delight! Subtitled 'an early romance' it tells the unlikely story of a boy's adventures: from saving the baby of the title to cabin boy, mate, battles with pirates, captain and a romantic happy ending. Multiple voices are employed, the best friend narrating with occasional exclaimations 'it's true!' 'hurrah!' 'aye aye sir!' from mermaids, sailors and a dog. The text has all the vigour charm and rhythym of Alhberg's best books. While Amstuz has illustrated many of Ahlberg's books (such as the Skeleton series and Monkey Do) here his style is new to me, more painterly, employing beautiful colours drawing on a seaside palette.

My three year old daughter (after a visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyards) remarked 'this book is about the time of Nelson' as the buildings, costumes and boats are so beautifully painted they give a real sense of the period. Actually the text refers to King William 1830s, but no one likes a precocious child, so please don't let that detract from my message; this book is so enjoyable that despite (very often) repeated reading I have still not tired of it, and my daughter knows it off by heart.

This tall tale will delight and amuse you! Do you really believe you can catch a baby in a hat? 17 Sep 2009
By D. Fowler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A baby all dressed up in a lace gown with a frilly bonnet on her head suddenly fell out of a window. Fortunately for her, a man down below took off his top hat and ran to catch her. Whew . . . he caught her! She smiled at him with those big blue eyes after she landed in the hat. The man's friend claims, "It's true! Believe me!" The baby's parents, of course, were delighted and gave his friend a "half a crown" as a reward. His friend promptly bought tickets for two to ride the rails. The adventure was on and before you know it they found themselves in London and just happened to fall onto a ship.

In the flash of an eye he grew up and was no longer a lowly cabin boy, but a mate fighting with swashbuckling pirates. Of course it only made sense that he would end up in "Good King William's Navy" fighting the French. The years were passing and the man's best friend was a Captain with his own ship and crew. His travels were coming to a close and he came home "with treasure in his trunk." He was walking past the building where he caught the baby in his hat. He looked up and saw some beautiful blue eyes looking down at him. Who was that beautiful woman?

I love stories with a little twist and the outcome of this book was delightful. The colonial setting and period look about the art work was very appealing. This tall tale would be fun to read aloud during circle time just to hear everyone's opinion as to its believability or not. Do you really believe that you could catch a baby in a top hat?

We love this book - "It's True!" 3 Nov 2010
By Shelley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
We recieved this book as a gift for our daughter and it became a family favorite on day one. Rich illustrations in the style of colonial documents, short text but compelling narrative, it is a win for the short attention span of our 18 month old, yet entertaining enough for mom and dad to read over and over again. Our daughter loves to point out the little details in the drawings - a stowaway cat, ships in the harbor, a flying fish and we love to split the reading work where one parent reads the main narrative and the second chimes in with the verbal call outs. I don't know that we would have picked this book up for ourselves, but we are defintely fans, and so is our daughter. It is a nice break from the bears, bunnies and farm animals that populate most of her book collection!
Love Allan Ahlberg! 13 Jan 2012

I first checked this book out from the local library then later bought it on amazon as a gift. The pictures are great, sort of colonical era in style to go along with the story. I have a daugher but I think it would certainly appeal to boys as well. The ratio of words to pictures is just right for pre-schoolers as well as beginner readers. So far I have not been disappoinyed by any of Ahlberg books!
