1.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by its cover 31 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The contents of this book do not live up to the promises made on the cover.
Why is it called a BIG book? It is 15cm x 23cm x 1.5cm and weighs 420g. Although a great deal is made of the fact that the book contains 47 chapters, one of them is less than 1 page long and several others less than 3 pages.

Chapter 15 is a word for word repeat of the last 2 pages of chapter 8.

The book also has a few typographical errors eg Abiword, Abi Word and instructions for using Nano on page ??( there are no page numbers in this book!) mention both Control X and Shift X to exit Nano.

Quote from the back page of the book "You will also learn system administration including the MySql database, Apache web server and Wordpress". These 3 topics are covered in just 6 pages.

The last paragraph in the Introduction would be a better description of this book. "This book is for anyone who wants to learn and understand the Raspberry Pi. It is great for students starting ICT or for someone starting a computer science course and is ideal for anyone getting into IT. This book also covers concepts of GNU/Linux and programming which makes it ideal for the first time user of Linux or the first time programmer"

There is, however, a comprehensive series of chapters covering writing a Python/PyGame game which are very useful for a beginner.

In summary, this book doesn't live up to its title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Would have made an adequate blog post. 18 Feb 2014
By Nick
This is not a sufficient guide for a beginner, nor of use to a more experienced techie, I can only recommend that you look elsewhere - I'm currently working my way through the Haynes Manual for the Pi, that looks far more promising.

As stated elsewhere in the reviews, there are numerous typographical errors, no page numbers, and no index. Overall it not only appears to be self-published, but self-printed too.

As I say, this book would be a set of useful blog posts if you looking at a particular aspect of the Pi, but unfortunately the author's enthusiasm doesn't transfer well to the page at all.
