Product Description

Product Description

3rd edition, revised February 2014 with larger/ better pictures per YOUR request :)

This really is the BIG book of paper beading. It was designed with the beginner in mind but there's plenty to keep even an experienced beader interested! The wrapping method taught primarily is designed by the Author and is what she teaches in her classes. The paper beads she makes are made to be durable, wearable pieces of art- and YOU can make them too!

It covers a History of paper beads, Paper Ed. 101, Bead board and why that's important, basic beads and shapes: oval, round, cylinder, cone and hourglass. Now let's step it up a notch: it covers simple techniques that make your beads a work of art and moves it into some shapes that are designed exclusively by the Author: two tone, double cuff and flat beads. WAIT! What about those amazing beads coming out of Africa and the Philippines? Yes- those are in there too! As well as so much more!

But the most important part? This is a fun and easy craft that doesn't need any fancy tools or expensive materials. Great for all ages

Good for those who like something different. Lots of detail and ideas. Can't wait to try some of the beading styles as I have only done barrel beads before. Handy to have on my tablet too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bead Therapy 22 Aug. 2012
By Celtic Girl - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
My foray into the world of paper bead making was pretty dismal until I found this book. While I have bought tutorials off a few online sites, all of them lacked the instructions and photos I yearned for in terms of trying to get the bead shape I wanted. Some of them provided "templates," but didn't really explain quite how to use them. "The Big Book of Paper Beads" truly lives up to its title. Not only have I discovered how to make the kind of beads I wanted to, I've learned other techniques that have taken my bead making from "craft" status to an art form. In the first few sections, Clarkson covers everything from Paper 101 to how to measure and make your own templates, and then she includes five more sections that take you beyond the basics (like making fancy paper beads, making your own custom paper, and alternate rolling methods, just to name a few). She also includes a section on paper bead making overseas (and includes organizations in the "Resources" section that raise awareness of how paper bead making provides support for different groups overseas), and teaches you how to make those wonderful overseas shapes (bicones, discs, and bells). This is truly a "green" craft, as most of the beads in the book are made from recycled paper (though Clarkson covers other paper choices as well). I've only worked through the first three sections of the book, and I have to say, this has been one of the best experiences I've had with learning a new craft from a book. I call it "bead therapy," because there is something really satisfying about taking some pages from a magazine and recycling them into a wearable piece of jewelry. Another plus: Clarkson invites readers to contact her with paper bead making questions, and she truly does enjoy the interaction. With all the detailed instructions, photos, and diagrams, you will love this book! P.S. [This review is about the new edited version of this e-book (August 21, 2012)]

4.0 out of 5 stars Brighten Up 30 Dec. 2012

I'm giving this a four star review although the instructions are so clear and concise it deserves a five star rating...except...the photography is atrocious! I have pretty good eyesight and the tiny little dull colored thumbnails were disturbingly hard to see. If this author wants to really 'knock 'em dead' with this book I have only one suggestion...get a professional photographer to do your photos. Your writing and instructions absolutely sing so you are doing a discredit to yourself by not having photos that show the wonderful work you are writing about. Looking at the photo in the upper right of my screen as I review this only strengthens my belief that better photography is the ONLY thing this book needs to be a best seller!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun craft/beadmaking book 28 July 2014
By M. Jones - Published on

I am definitely a crafter, and when I spotted this book offered as a freebie for the Kindle, I had to grab it. I quickly read it, and feel very lucky to have caught this one! I have always wanted to try making paper beads, ever since I saw a necklace a friend's grandmother had made from old church bulletins. This book covers not only the basic, tapered-on-both-ends bead, but also offers many shape variations as well. I also like the author's suggestion of using plastic handled cotton swabs as the cores of the beads, so there's no need to worry about how you'll slide the bead off of the core when you're done.

The author also offers many suggestions for different types of paper to use for the beads. Some of my favorite ideas are for showers-- using the wrapping paper from the gifts at a bridal or baby shower to make a memorable gift for the guest of honor, and/or having guests write wishes on paper and then craft the beads themselves as a gift. I also really like the idea of using old office paper that has been printed on only one side-- decorate the blank side however you choose, then make beads! Fun way to recycle. I am very eager to make lots of beads now!
