This is an animated version of the children's story "The Big Friendly Giant" by Roald Dahl. While ostensibly a childrens story, it contains much that will keep mothers and fathers watching as well.
As befits a children's story, the plot is simple and direct. A small girl, Sophie, is kidnapped by a friendly giant when she catches him at his work delivering dreams. She discovers many things about giants and their world including the fact that there are also some very bad giants who want to eat people.
Eventually, Sophie and the Big Friendly Giant enlist the help of the Queen of England and they set out to catch the bad giants.
Children as young as four years old will enjoy this film. They may be little afraid but it's not so bad as to give them nightmares. The film will also appeal to older children too as the story, while simple in it's barest form, contains enough detail and wit to maintain interest.
Also, children will find a lot to talk about in the film and, if parents buy the original novel, they have something to read to, or with their child.
Sometimes, children watch a film over and over until it is worn out. In this case, be warned, they may watch this one so much that they wear out the player!

An excellent children's classic. I use to watch it alot on VHS as a child and was delighted to find it remastered for DVD. I bought it originally to share with my much younger adopted brother though I watch it more than he does, he doesn't even get a look in. It features the classic songs; "Whizz Pop" and "Sometimes Secretly." It is definitely a must buy for your children (or if you are just a big kid yourself, too which I identify).

we had it taped off the tv when i was about 2 and i loved it. i used to watch it all the time, like 2/3 times a week when i was little, despite the giants scaring the crap out of me (well i was very young) but it never stopped me watching it, to the point it drove my older sister mad and she hated my turn to pick a film as it was always this one, and im surprised the video still works to be honest as iv watched it that often, and know it pretty much word for word (in my defense iv been watching it for about 20 years now). i was super thrilled when i found this had been released on dvd a few years ago and had to buy it straight away. yes the animation isnt as great as some of the stuff thats around these days, but its still well worth watching. has a great storyline, as anyone who has read the book or other roald dahl films will know, and is interesting enough for many age ranges to find it enjoyable. it also reminds me of my childhood, which is always nice when a film does this. david jason is great as the bfg, as are the other characters and is a great way to spend an hour or so.

After watching a Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime last Christmas, my Grandson has become a massive (or as he says it 'Sassive') fan of giants. So when The BFG was recently on tv, he asked me if I could get him the DVD. I bought two, so that if he wears one out, I've got another as spare! He's so hooked, that I've had to knit him a BFG toy, complete with big ears, nose, black cape, the lot. The BFG Film seems to be timeless and an absolute joy to watch...........even on my own in secret! But don't tell anyone!
