5.0 out of 5 stars Thought -provoking scientfic essays 22 Jan 2006
By Shalom Freedman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Among the topics Asimov writes about in this work are: The Fossil Fuels, Recipe for an Ocean, Technology and Energy, The Glorious Sun, The Large Satellites of Jupiter, Of Life Beyond, The Beginning and the End, Gravitation Unlimited, Man and Computer, The Big Weather Change,America A.D.2176, The Coming Decades in Space, Colonizing the Heavens, the Moon as Threshold.

Here is a bit of the kind of speculation the book is rich in. These are the concluding words of the title essay of this volume.

"Can we allow ourselves to wonder whether everything that exists is one of an infinite number of such objects that arises out of something more fundamental than itself, which is, in turn ,one of an infinite number of such objects that arises out of something still more fundamental which is itself one of an infinite number of such objects that-

And so on, and on, and so on-

Without beginning, and without end."
2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the casual scientist/sci fi reader 4 April 2011
By E. S. Charpentier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Asimov's collection of essays reprinted from various publications touches on topics such as chemistry, physics, electronics and astronomy as well as the philosophy of humanity's usage and development of these sciences. I have to admit that I didn't read them all in their entirety, but rather started them and read until I got bored or my head hurt to much. I am not personally well-versed in any of these areas, and so learned quite a bit. However, the information is rather dated especially in electronics and other technology. This is mostly a collection for the die-hard fan of Asimov, or some of his more scientifically educated fans. I'm pretty sure I thought it was science fiction when I picked it up, probably without even reading the back.
